View Full Version : Bizzare wide angle question

Alright,
I know this is a little strange and unorthodox. I'm hoping to move up from a G3 to a Drebel in the next week or two, but I am disapointed by the wide angle provided by the 18mm lens on this camera. I have read about the fisheye option for creating a better wide angle shot and that looks interesting, though a lot of work. Has anyone tried one of the wide angle converters that Canon makes for the G series? To what degree would this work on a Drebel? :?:

I don't think the wide angle converter that you put on the G3 will go anywhere near the "Drebel" They are totally different. You would need to think about a wide-angle lens to fit your new camera and I imagine that will be expensive.
Am I right in thinking the converter for the G3 screws over the lens and sits there allowing the camera lens to focus (and Possibly zoom)?

The lenses will screw onto the filter thread (I believe it is a 58mm), but I think the larger size of the sensor in the Drebel prevents it from being effective - the lenses won't give an acceptable image across the entire frame.
It might make for some interesting effects, though. :D

Well the kit lens for the DRebel is in fact 58mm, so if that is the size of the converter it should fit. Now what the resulting effect of this adaption will be interesting. If anyone has access to a converter and has a DRebel please try this just to see what happens.

Try doing a Google search for "wcon 10d".

I searched but only found a Japanese page. Do you know something we don't?

Look at the pictures. I think the result leaves a little bit to be desired. Also check out the DPChallenge thread (http://www.dpchallenge.com/forum.php?action=read&FORUM_THREAD_ID=62050). In it is a reference to someone who tried this on http://www.dpreview.com. You can probably find out more by searching there.

You know, if you got the 300D, both Sigma and Canon have options to stick a fisheye lens on. Some a primes and some are zooms. Just an option I am chucking out there.

If you are considering to go with a 300D, have a look at this one:

I use this cheap Russian fisheye lens for extreme wideangle situations.

I thought only pentax made a zoom fisheye :?:

Thanks everyone for your comments. I am most interested in how the Canon Wide Angle Converters work, not the actual fisheyes. In particular, the WC-DC589. The reason I am asking this is because I already have this component from my G3 kit and I am looking at buying a drebel. Has anyone actually tried this?

I havn't tried it and I don't know if it will work and I don't think youll get as wide a shot with the Dreb as you do now with the G3. The kit lens for the Dreb is 28.8mm-80mm(I believe) because of the 1.6 crop factor. If the converter you have for the G3 doesn't work you may need to pick up a fisheye.
Good Luck

Are you looking to buy a drebel for the improves image quality you would get?
If so then the wide angle converter will significantly reduce the quality.
How wide does the convertor let you go on the G3?

You can get a manual 16 mm Zenitar Fisheye from www.rugift.com, takes a whil to ship it to USA, but this lens is not bad.
Otherwise you can get a 15mm Canon or Sigma fisheye with AF and automatic frame, but if you want to spend more money you can get also the Sigma 12-24 a superwide zoom.
To correct the fisheye pics on Mac and Win:

oops, now the Zenitar cost 145$, six month ago it was at 119$.

Hi Malok
If you mean the Canon WC-DC58N, I have one of these at work for use on the company G3. It gives a little more field of view than the 18mm end of the kit lens on the drebel will but the quality is not nearly as good. The wide converter has a pronounced CA and barrel distortion. I routinely use defish software with it, as most of our pictures are technical or documentary. I have a Zenitar for my 10D and use Image align pro when I need straight lines or PC, it's easy as pie. The quality is worlds away better than the wide converter, it has a much wider field of view, and is the same price. A no-brainer, really.

I compared the kit lens with my 28-105 lens and a G2 DC58 adapter to see how quality compared. the kit lens is sharper (wide open and stopped down) than the 28-105 with the adapter. I thought it might be useful to avoid changing lenses when I wanted wide angle shots (avoid sensor dust), but it looked pretty poor.

Photoguynorth,
did you also try out the converter on the kit lens?
That's what would really be needed to get true wide angle on the 10D (18*1.6*0.8 = 23 as opposed to 28*1.6*0.8 = 36).
Do you have a vignetting issue with this combination?
In this > http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1029&message=7479662 < thread at DPreview, there are some examples of such combinations. The Olympus WCON-08B is advised, as it is the largest wide angle converter (62 mm thread) and has very good glass quality (AFAIK about USD 250,-).
Best regards,
Andy

I did some quick tests with the kit lens - there is vignetting at the corners. If you zoom to ~24mm it goes away, so you will gain something, but I'm not sure you'll be happy with the sharpness. I'll try and do more testing later this weekend.
