S30 Aperture Priority at Night

Hi, I just recently bought an S30 which I am putting through its paces and testing all the knobs and buttons. I am very pleased but have just got a simple query

I have a question about long night-time exposures in Av mode without flash.

While I can set up to 15 sec shutter time in Tv mode, when using Av, the maximum time I can get is 1 sec (shown in red because a longer time is required)

Is this normal for this and other digital cameras? I could not see anything in the manual.

Owning an S40, I have exactly the same result.

I guess the solution is to put it in M mode and change all the settings (both aperture and shutter speed seperately)
