I havnt really done any professional work before but since getting enough cash to get a L series lens and a 30D i decided i would try to get some work under my belt.

Ive been asked to shoot at a few shows for a dance society at my University- It will be held in a small theatre based on campus.

My question to you all is how can i best capture the show without spoiling it for the audience. I dont think i can stay in my seat as i dont have a long enough lens plus i think it would be nicer to get some varying shots in different positions. What about using the flash too? i have the 24-70 f/2.8 L, so i suppose i may get away without using a flash during the slower parts of the show.

Ive had a look through the Concert Photography FAW, What other tips do you have for me?

Shoot the dress rehearsal, if at all possible. This will give you the run of the house and allow you to get the angles you want. If you want to really impress your customer, attend 2 or 3 rehearsals and learn the show. Then you'll be able to prepare for the big moments and catch them when they happen.

Concentrate on closeups and small groups during the rehearsals. Then during the actual performance, get back in the tech booth where you won't bother anyone and get the wide shots of the whole stage during the big numbers.

Other than that - keep the ISO high, the aperture wide, and chimp often, keeping an eye on your histogram. Metering is a great challenge, especially with dark backgrounds.

Leave the flash in the bag.
