I was wondering if there was such a thing as a corded remote that I could plug into my flashes sync socket to make it fire, for use off of my camera. The test button is a pain because its rescessed for one and also pointing the flash in preferred direction while trying to fire it useing test button. A cord would come in handy at times, mainly for long exposures in the middle of the night to illuminate parts of the composition, and light painting ext.

You can buy a custom cord like you want. Just go to Paramount Cord and have them make you a custom cord with your flash end connector on one end, and a push button switch on the other (Paramount calls this switch a "manual tripper").
See:

Or you can easily make your own.
Just go to Radio Shack and buy a small push button switch. Cut the camera end off of a sync cord that will fit your flash and is long enough, and attach the two wires of the cut end of the sync cord to the switch.
It is that easy.
What sort of flash do you want to attach the cord to?
An inexpensive radio slave off ebay might also be a good way to go, you could get like function, but without the cord.
Enjoy! Lon

Excellent, I figured there had to be a way to do it. Thank you very much for info and links. I currently have a SB-26 and SB-28 that I have been using off camera in manual mode on my Xti. I plan to get a 580ex in the not to distant future so I can use Ettl and rear curtain and strobelight modes.
Thank you again!

I think both the Nikon SB-26 and SB-28 have the PC connection varient on the flash chassis called the "Nikon Screwlock".
This is a nice secure sync connection as it screws to the flash connector on the flash.
