Hi,

I'm in the market for a spare battery for my 400D. In the UK I've seen the HAHNEL NB-2LHP 7.4v 720mAh CANON for £25 which seems a bit expensive compared to the sterlingtek ones which are available here -> http://sterlingtek.stores.yahoo.net/twocanb11bap.html

I assume I can use the sterlintek ones from the US in a UK charger?

If thats the case, is there any reason why I should buy the Hahnel over the Sterlingtek? My sister is in the US at the moment, so I was going to get the Sterlingtek ones shipped to her unless anyone knows any gotchas that I've missed. Or in fact a better battery option sourced from the UK?

Thanks for your help,
Ian

Yes the SterlingTeks are 100% compatible. And they work just as well as, if not better than, the OEM.

There is no reason to not save money. As far as anything sourced in the UK I have no idea since I'm not there. The only "gotcha" would be customs fees (import duties) but the value might not be high enough to apply. Not sure...I'm not up on UK import laws.

That said, what I usually do is buy 1 OEM for every 1 aftermarket brand, just to be on the "safe" side of things. I don't like my only backup to be generic...but I then have quite a few batteries and shoot professionally.

I would go with sterlingtek as they seem like a reputable seller. Many have used it without much problems.

And yes you can charge the battery from there in your UK charger since the battery is not region specific.

This link is for a NB-2L rather than the NB-2LH batteries. Are they both compatible with the 400D?

Also has anyone used these much cheaper batteries for a long time? I remember that my father once bought cheap camcorder batteries. They were fine at the start but they quickly became unusuable as they wouldn't retain their charge.

On the battery in my link it states: "Replace NB-2L, NB-2LH" Li-ion 7.4V 750mAh"
I have used these now for about four months, and if anything I suggest they stay "live" longer than the original Canon battery, ie more shots per charge. I wouldn't hesitate to buy more if I needed them.

Thanks for all your replies - very helpfull.

I guess the only reason against going with a non-Canon battery is that if the battery leaks in the camera Canon won't fix it for free. At least thats what they say in one of the fliers that came with the camera. Seeing as I tend to take the battery out after each use anyway I don't think this would be that high a risk. I see other people use the battery grip to "protect" them from this problem, but I don't really think I have a need for the grip - just a spare battery in case my main one runs out.
