Would Canon ever produce an EF 200-400 f/4L or anything faster, like 200-400 f/3.5L?

Just wondering what everyone else thought.

That would be nice, although I'd rather see an f/2.8 version for low light shooting. Keep in mind that something with that much reach and a wide aperture is bound to be extremely heavy and cumbersome.

I can't see a f/2.8 version, but I could see a 200-400 IS f/4. Nikon makes this very lens, and canon really doesn't have a competitor to it. I guess the closest is the 100-400 but its a full stop slower, and has an aged IS implementation (1st generation)

Maybe they should just update the 100-400's IS, and the offer f/4 as an option, kinda like the 70-200's two versions. Might ding the 400/4L DO sales, though.

I presume the 200-400/4 would weigh and cost less.

Have a look at the Nikon equivalent...

7# and $5k... imagine a 2.8!

Exactly - and at 14 inches long without its lens hood (18 inches fitted!), it's like a piece of scaffolding filled with lead!

;)

Superb IQ though.
