i know the lens i get is going to be the 70-200 F4L but the Q is IS or no IS or for the same price as the IS should i just go with the 2.8L non IS ? the lower light situation scares me a bit if i want to shot inside or should i just get the F4L non IS and see how it works for me and if i think i need more just sell it and get the 2.8 or the IS version ?

Well, if it sways your opinion any, the f/4L IS was just reviewed by Photozone.de as the sharpest telezoom Canon has ever made. Apparently, they made some changes with the IS version that improve the IQ over an already great lens.

I don't have one, but a friend does (2.8 IS), and the lens is OUT OF CONTROL and WRONG! Probably the best Canon lens ever made. Hell of a portrait lens at 70, and stare into your neighbors window a mile away at 200 (with a crop body even more)...not that I'm saying I do that (because I don't have a 70-200) ;)

2.8 if you can afford it and don't mind the extra weight. That extra stop brings shallower DOF, higher shutter speed and activates more accurate AF points in the higher Canon bodies. Its a tough decision though, there isn't a lemon in the whole 70-200 range.

i would say 70-200 2.8 non IS if you are going to spend for the 70-200 F4 IS, heck for a couple hundred more you could just get the 70-200 2.8 IS and be done with it. If you dont mind the extra weight (which isnt bad once you get used to it) then 2.8 is the way to go.

Funds permitting, I'd go for the f/2.8L IS. No question.

I personally went for the 70-200F4L IS instead of the 2.8 non IS. Weight/size was the main factor as I think the 2.8 is a beast compared to the 4.0 lenses. Also, if you're not shooting sports, I think the F4L IS still provides sharper handheld pictures at 200mm under low light conditions when compared to the non IS 2.8. IMHO.
f/2.8L IS versus f/4L IS is a different story of course.

I have the 70-200 f/4l non IS and have no complaints with sharpness. On bright days with my eos 3 i can get some fast shutter speeds. Its not very heavy and i can walk around with it all day and it doesnt bother me one bit. Not that it makes any dfference but for my next lens itll be the 135l f/2(just have to sneek it past the war department).Regards Gordo..

For me the issue is weight rather than aperture. If you honestly don't mind the extra weight then you would be better off with the f/2.8 IS
BUT the f/4 lens a superb lens as you know, and IS simply makes it magnificent. Personally I'd rather have the f/4 lens with IS than a 2.8 lens wiothout. I'd have to seriously think about the choice between either of the IS lenses but in the end, I am not a PJ amd I don't want too heavy a lens to carry about. I'd go f/4

Well, if money is a concern, you might also consider the Sigma 70-200 f2.8. It is generally well regarded. I can not personally speak to image quality vs the L's, but it seems that those who own it are happy with it. It might be slightly below the L's but slightly below the L's is still pretty good.

If you really think you'll need the extra stop for inside work, go with the 2.8, otherwise, I'd go for the f/4IS. I have the f/4 and the only upgrade I'll do is to the f\4IS...the weight of the 2.8 is too much for me since I have one 3+ lb lens already.

yea i hear it has more weight to it and not as good quality i have looked into that one too the way i was looking at it was that if i go with the F4L non IS and did not like it i could get most of my money back and upgrade to the IS or the 2.8 so it looks like that is the way i am going at this momment but i have been known to do diff when i get to the store lol i just hear so many good things about all of them everyone has a diff opinion its hard to make the call that seems like the safe way and the way i look at it is if i have to spend 100 bucks at most to find out the diff then i think it might be worth it to me then spending the extra on somthing i might not need but then again i know by getting the more expensive one i really could not go wrong see this is what im up against i already know i dont want to spend the money for the 2.8 IS but i am trying to make up my mind with the 2.8 non IS or the 4 IS
