Saw this goose last week with this weird thing on his neck. Seems like it belongs there, really.

I remembered a post by JZaun showing a goose with something on it's neck, but the picture has disappeared. JZaun you still have that pic? Was it anything like this?

And a lousy OoF showing the front of the thing, oversharpened on purpose.

Anyone have any ideas about this thing?

Scottes,
That is a neck band placed on the goose for easier tracking. More than likely it was banded in Northern Canada mid summer when the birds are flightless due to the molt. Bands are placed by both US and Canadian biologists. Easier to track from a distance than the leg band.

I'll bet the goose thinks it's a real pain in the neck.

It sure looks inconvenient for the poor dear.

No, I deleted the pic. It looks like the same thing. I found another one and saw a big number on it. Must be a tracking thing. I thought that was done with a leg band. This neck thing doesn't look very friendly to the goose. It would sure tick me off it it was me!!

JZaun

But here is another goose>>>We can put a band on this one! :D

That neck thingie is a brace. His neck was quacked and he's trying to duck out of the bill. He saw that late night infomercial for the Law Office of Downey and Webber and realized if he ruffled enough feathers he could fly away with enough bread to never have to dunk his head for fish again.

Every picture has a story, no? 8)

A little bit of research helps... Apparently this is a radio transmitter band.

http://www.pwrc.usgs.gov/BBL/homepage/aboutaux.htm#neck says
"Occasionally you will see a collar that has only 2 characters or is completely black. Collars with two characters have a radio transmitter attachment. The collar allows the radioed bird to be visually identified as well as tracked by radio."

Well, at least it ain't from Montreal fouling up the Boston goose gene pool.

Ouch! that looks painful!

Surely its illegal to do that to an animal :?:
Look, it can't even bend it's neck properly!
It has an ankle tag too, why both?

Looks like the thing they put on my dog's neck when I had him fixed.

He still hasn't forgiven me.
