I'm wondering if anyone else out there is having problems ( or has solved the problem ) with trying to get accurate color with their Canon i960. All my photos printed on Canon Pro paper seem to have a yellowish tint. All my photos printed on Canon Plus Paper seem to have a purplish tint to them. I seem to print every photo several times trying to adjust the color to get it right, but it just never matches what I see on the screen. I'm wondering if I'm missing something?

Here's how I print the photos.

I use Photoshop 7, and used Adobe Gamma to first adjust my monitor. I then select "print with preview" and selected "show more options". There I selected "color management" in the pull down box, document for the source space, "perceptual" for the intent, and either "canon i960 sp1" if printing on Canon Photo Plus or "canon i960 pr1" if printing on Canon Pro Paper for the profile.

Once in the print dialog box, I select either "photo paper plus glossy" or "photo paper pro" for the media type (depending on the paper I'm using ). For Print Quality I select "custom" and enter a Quality level of 1 ( fine ) and a half toning selection of "diffusion". I then set the color adjustment to manual and made sure all of the sliders were set to 0. I made sure that ICM was not selected, and that the print type was "photo" and the brightness was "normal". By adjusting the sliders I have been able to get somewhat better photos. but not great.

Well this weekend, I got frustrated enough to go to Sam's Club and try an HP 7960. Loaded the latest drivers off the HP web site ( that now support color management ), setup photoshop to use the 7960's profile, setup the print driver to use HP Photo Paper Plus and to disable driver color management, hit the print button, and the photos come out great. The colors in the photos match what I see on the screen. It couldn't have been easier!!!! The other nice thing about the HP, I printed on Kodak Ultima and Ilford Galleria Paper and the prints came out excellent. If only HP ink wasn't so expensive!!!!!

So before I throw in the towel and spend my life savings on HP Ink, does anyone have any suggestions on improving the color on my Canon i960 prints??? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Wojo

In you're current workflow, you've selected an ICC profile for your "Print Space." Thus you don't want the printer to perform additional color managment. Therefore "Print type" should be set to "None." By selecting "photo" you're asking the print driver to peform its own color corrections (appropriate to a photo).

Frankly, you seem so deep into your problem that it would be hard to figure out the actual problem without going back to basics. Quite often, one adjusts the Adobe Gamma utility settings to compensate for unrecognized flaws in other parts of the color management workflow which only become exposed when you print.

Two tips (thanks to John_T):

1. Start with a reference image which requires no photoshop adjustments (see link below). If it doesn't look right in PS, then your monitor is not calibrated. Then don't edit it; just print it. If it comes out OK, the problem was probably your monitor calibration.

2. With #1, use a basic print workflow:
Source: Adobe or sRGB
Printer: "Printer Color Management" (recommended) or "Same as Source"
Driver: Select correct print media and check "auto" for color adjustment.

A good reference image (in Adobe RGB) is located here: http://raph.levien.com/files/

If you successfuly get past these steps, then you can refine your workflow and add ICC profiles/color adjustments as appropriate. For further help check the "feature articles" at http://www.computer-darkroom.com/home.htm

Pretty cool setting Ian. Do you select that same profile "CNB5CEA0.ICM...Canon i960 SP1 (Photo Paper Plus Glossy)" regardless of the actual paper being used? do you only use that paper? Or, should I create an Ian's Excellent Print profile for each paper?

I haven't noticed any discernible tint from my i960 with 4x6 Photo Paper Plus Glossy, or 8.5x11 Photo Paper Pro, using the default printer settings. But silly me, I like the colors as they come out of the G3, and don't try to PS them.

Seems to me that trying to adjust colors on your monitor, then adjust them for the printer, is adding way too many potential variables, not to mention the time (and expense).

Wise words. Most prints should look quite good right out of the camera (assuming good exposure).

Even so, many are appropriately committed to the challenging task of mastering Photoshop. When you start sharing your PS-processed images with friends and colleagues - via prints or web-based images - you inevitably run into color management issues. The transition can be painful and costly - especially if you like to tinker, fiddle and fuss. At times of peak frustration, dfrost's wisdom should be recalled.

David,
I am currently using just the Canon Paper Plus Glossy. I have printed with other Canon papers and change the profile to match.
I can email you the other Ian's Excellent Print profiles for only $500.00US each. A portion of all sales will go towards the purchase of a new 600 prime

WojoAre you still using your HP7960? I can seem to get output to match monitor. Montior is calibrated. I posted a shot on this web and it looks same on notebook as it did on my desktop, so assume it must be in printer or color management set up

i am having some issues with mine in CS3...Never did. And HP NO HELP.

I gave to my daughter (works fine for what she is doing) and got a Epson R1800. Works great with CS3.
