View Full Version : What about the Tamron 17-35mm/2.8-4 Di?

I've seen some positive reviews/comments on Tamron's 28-75mm/2.8 Di, but I haven't seen any reviews/comments on their 17-35mm/2.8-4 Di lens. Does anyone here know anything about it? I have a digital Rebel on the way and with the 1.6x it seems like this lens would be a good choice (about 27mm to 56mm w/ a film camera). I am also interested in the 28-75mm Tamron, but the 17-35mm interests me because of how wide it can go.
Thanks for the help! :)

Somehow this lens is not that popular...........you're probably better off spending a little more on the canon version with a constant f4 aperture. :-)
Hope this helps.

I've seen a few comments on other forums that suggest the Tamron is slightly better than the Canon 17-40L - which would make it very good!

I understand the (generally applicable) remark that a Canon L is normally a safer bet than a third party lens.
However, I don't quite understand how a constant F4 aperture is preferrable to a 2.8-4 aperture ???.
Or does the :-) convey a deeper meaning to those with better knowledge of the issue than me?
Best regards,
Andy

If the Canon is better,. it is not BECAUSE it has a canstant f/4,. it is in spite of the smaller aperture..
Yes it would be more desireble to have a faster lens,. all else being equal,. the question is,. is the Tamron Canon's equal?
Another example is the Sigma 17-35mm which starts at f/2.8....
It's larger aperture make it "better" than than the Canon...
But in reality the lens is something of a dog.. and certainly not the equal of the Canon 17-40mm f/4 by any stretch of the imagination...

The March 04 edition of Popular Photography (US magazine) is supposed to have a review.

Thanks for the links. I need to see if I can still find a March issue of PP to see their review.
