Another 580ex quick one

Hi,

Coming from a different system, I tried looking in the manual for AF assist beam even when the flash light power is off. Can the 580EX do this? If can, how do I set it on?

With the flash on and in Master mode, press the lightening bolt looking button until the three lines in front of the flash head (on the display of course) blink. Rotate the wheel to "off" and you're set.

(edit) oops...this sets it to master and will fire your slaves without firing the main. sorry. (it might work for AF assist beam only...I'll have to try)

I just tried it...doesn't work...well, kinda works, but not effective. It will still fire a test flash and sends WB info to the camera. bummer.

With the 580 on the camera and turned on, set the custome function of the camera to have flash not to fire, (CF7-1 on my 20D), that should do it.

Do this with the custom functions on your 30D.
Set C.Fn. 5 to 0 (AF assist beam on)
Set C.Fn. 7 to 1 (flash does not fire)
You need to turn on your 580EX for the AF assist but it won't flash.

You're reading the wrong manual...

Page 170 of 30D manual....
C.Fn-07 Flash firing
0=fires;
1=Does not fire (but AF does)

BTW....you may want to consider C.Fn-5=2, which has AF assist only with external flash, i.e. turns off the annoying white AF assist light with the on-camera flash.
