Try bumping your ISO up to see if you can get these shots without the flash. Don't be afraid of high ISO shots. Canon dslr cameras handle this very well! I think your first shot would be great if the mood of natural lighting was present.

Also you have some very interesting crops. In my most humblest of opinions, I think you need to either open up the photo to show more of the environment or crop tighter to remove elements such as the chair in the background in the first photo.
