Shot my first concert for the newspaper tonight, had a blast. A 5D would have definately been nice.

Very nice - the 6th one down is my favourite. What did you shoot with?

It would help if you would put numbers by them. They are pretty nice but a bit small.

I don't know who's who.

Also, you have a Canon 1D??? That should be quite capable.

I shoot everything with an XT. Would love to have a 5D or a IIDS (?) but would use an XT anytime.

I worked shows with Josey when he wore black Wayfarers with blue lenses. :) Great guys!

#6 is best by a wide margin IMO.
If you shot RAW: #2, 3, 4, 5 and 8 have overexposed parts and/or clipped channels that should be recovered.

I've seen the mention of clipped channels before, do you know of a thread or tutorial somwhere that could explain how to fix clipped channels?

Thanks

When shot RAW, use ACR, and pull back exposure. Copy paste the file onto you original. Then use something like in this (http://www.thelightsrightstudio.com/videos/BlendedExposures.mov) quicktime tutorial to mask the layer.
Otherwise: channel mixer might work (bringing info from the G and B channel into the red for example.). Might give a color cast, but PS can set a layer to luminouscity blend for that. Also: read this (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/restore-clipped.shtml)

OK, this is the third time this weekend I've checked your pics out...and for the most part, they are a good attempt at composition...obviously the mike keeps getting in your way...I find faces to be better than the back of the head...

If I remember correctly from way back, you have some pretty good equipment in the lens category. There is no EXIF available in your pics...

You'll want to number them and give us some gear info, it helps to stimulate discussion...

I was not allowed to the front of the stage facing the band, had to shoot from the sides and behind. Canon 1D, ISO 3200, 300 2.8IS, 85mm 1.8, and 28-90 4-5.6

Does this mean you'll be shooting a lot more concert performances for the paper? Another Photog. here uses the 300mm 2.8 to his advantage at the concert venue...Check Dwight McCann's work out...he's fluent in the language of the 300mm 2.8L lens...

The stage side shots have some advantages, cause the actual "mike in the mouth" syndrome can be avoided in close up profiles...however, the mike stands seem to be in the way, especially if there are several ones on the stage...

It often, becomes a numbers game, requiring a lot more shots to get a satisfactory result to select form...

I can get good cross stage shots with the 85mm 1.8 lens...check my Tequila Sunrise post part 1 and two...they all are cross stage shots, with a lot of post processing and cropping/trimming...

Between the 300mm and the 85mm lenses, you could cover everyone on the stage...but it does look like you will want to consider a wide lens for that occasional full stage shot...

Well, the (original) Canon 1D has four megapixels, so the leap to 5D is greater in that sense than from XT.
