My 580 EX has been having problems for the last month and i'm finally fed up enough to send it in for repairs.

Since I use my camera almost daily and just cannot go weeks without my flash, I'm wondering if buying the 430 would be a good solution to my problem for now and then provide me a slave flash once my 580 is back.

i have no idea what the problem with my 580 ex is, it slips between ETTL and TTL randomly, then once in TTL mode it blows everything completely out. It's also stopped sending a focus beam and seems to just shut itself off and won't come back on unless i actually flip it's switch. i have no idea what repairing it will cost and wonder if i would be better off buying another 580EX.

your thoughts would be appreciated. thanks!

It's a good idea to have backups but what you get is up to you and your finances.

I'd say the 430EX would be a good choice if you know that you can make good use of a slave flash once your 580EX comes back.

I'd get another 580 if it were me.

Yes, I have used that same combination and it works great.

You might also consider the Sunpak 383 as a very capable, and very inexpensive ($80.00), pinch hitter for your flash being repaired.

Check the forum sticky for a nice review of this flash unit (link below).

Yes, 430 EX is a good choice, in specialy as a slave device ! It's also good as a back up solution.
