Sailplanes are some of the most beautiful shapes in aviation, your shots have displayed that trait very well.

Wonderful shots Tim, number three is astonishing looks like the pilot is eyeballing you, must have thought a rocket launcher was pointed at him ;-).

Truely superb efforts.

Fantastic images - they are beautiful! I reckon that Piper has pulled a tow or two in its time - what a great little workhorse they are.

I am fascinated by the powered glider, too (BXSH). Do you have any of it in motion?

Amazing - thank you. I imagine the engine and prop fold back into that slot behind the engine mount point. What a great idea.

Off topic, I know, but would the pilot need a powered license for that or would his/her glider ticket still be applicable...

*wanders off, head shaking... modern technology...*

Yes the pilot shut the Rotax engine down and flicked a switch and the whole engine mechanism folded down into the body of the glider..:)

I really don't know but would imagine he would need a single engine pilots licence, Maybe some who knows could speak up..;)

This was working hard most of the day, Looks an old tug doesnt it..

Nice shots Busterboy, I'm having a little difficulty finding the exact location of Topcliffe Gliding Club. Tried Googling it, plenty of articles but none with a location. Are you allowed on the site (with permission of course) or do you have to shoot from the perimeter. It looks like a good location so any chance of some info please?

Seeing that he had to use a 500mm, I'll guess he was at the perimeter, but I could be wrong.

Go north from your place on the A1>>A168>>A19 to Thirsk, Head out towards Sutton Bank, Climb to the top of the bank and the first road on the right, Head down there 1 mile, It is well signposted...;)

The airfield has a perimiter and most of my shots were taken outside the boundery, Its a beautiful place for photography Mick, Do yourself a favour and have a look up there, On site hot meals and drinks and a very friendly bunch of guys..:D

Busterboy, Nice shots of gliders, they bring back some good memories for me.:D

Un-less they have renamed themselves, the gliding club on top of sutton bank is known as The Yorkshire Gliding club. i've had a couple of weeks flying there years ago when i owned a std cirrus 15mtr sailplane, i had some great flying in both wave and thermals. oooooh what memories!!!!!!!!

Its possible to walk around the site and some good views over the vale of york and the white horse of kilburn can be had from what i remember.

Ah! all becomes clear now, I had wondered if it was The Yorkshire Gliding Club but they are quite a distance away from Topcliffe so I couldn't be sure. Thanks for the directions Busterboy and thanks for confirmation Glen, if the weather isn't too bad I may make it up this weekend. Thanks again for the info.

Fabulous shots - impressive lens. What do you use to steady it?

Perfectly true Glenn.:)

Due to my lack of knowledge about the place and never been before I just got the camera into gear and did some shooting, Now I double check it is called The Yorkshire Gliding Club. Nr Topcliffe..:o

Excellent place for anyone to visit though, Beautiful blue skies and enough fresh air to make you very happy.

I for one will be going back another day.;)

Busterboy, if your going back to sutton bank why not try an "air experience flight" in a two seater glider, i'm sure they will accomadate you, and with something smaller than your 500mm lens you should get some fine airbourne shots............................but be warned gliding is VERY addictive !!!

That's a great series of shots! I especially like the last one, but wonder about the area where the wing meets the fuselage? It looks a bit overlightened to me.

Got PS? Take a look at this thread for how to use a Layer Mask to selectivly lighten/darken part of a pic. It's easily reversible:

That one plane that can take ITselfs off and then glides is the BOMB! Can it reactive the prop while it is in the air and get higher again? How much fuel does it carry, or how long can it run the engine I guess is what I am getting at...
