Now, I don't mean sports where reach is required.
I'm not talking basketball, baseball, etc.
I've seen it written many, many times here as to focus speed of various lenses, including where it's said, and well known, that the 85 1.8 focuses much faster than the 85L.
So, when I'm out and about and want to carry a medium focal length lens, I usually chose the 24-70 as my walking around companion.
I've never read or heard a comparo of its focus speed compared to other lenses. I find it wanting. What do you think?
In AIServo, it doesn't keep up with a fast moving object.

I have been using my 85 1.2 II for both basketball and volleyball. Works great. I don't find the focus spped a problem

I use the 24-70 for basketball, it works well. The focus isn't quite as fast as the 70-200, but it's darn close.

Yes, if you take a look at the gyms with better light(Div I) and pro bball, you'll see 24-70 as a common lens on both Nikon's and Canon's. Goes well with a 70-200 or a 300 2.8.

I was speaking of the Mark I, not the newer lens.
Thanks to the others here for your input.

I've used the 24-70 for under-the-hoop stuff. Not really a problem. I don't have the light in most venues for it to work elsewhere though. Focus speed doesn't seem to be a concern. It's usually reach or aperture that causes a hangup.

so true, i tried using it a few days ago at a track day with cars and bikes, i was on the track in little photo huts so was no more than maybe 2-3m away from the cars coming in to the corner and it just didnt cope so used my 70-200 for 99% of the day, BUT for everything else its perfect.
