I'm not sure which look you're wanting, but is it that the same person is in the photo?
It's a simple Photoshop trick, you take various photos of the person and simply put them in one document. Then add layer masks to each and erase what you don't want. Then add a background color (Dark purple in this case...) and you're done!
Just a couple more steps and you'll get what looks like what he did.

Thanks for all the info, just need to do some brushing up on my Photoshop knowledge i guess.
