John (JLP9639) and myself drove to the Scottish POTN meeting by taking a long route along Loch Laggan, then onto Spean Bridge (more photos of that later), and then through Fort William into Glencoe. These three shots were taken from the A86.

All great pics John, but the third really stands out for me. Love the contrast btween light and shadow, and the composition works really well.

Fantastic shots John, the lighting and composition of the third one are especially nice.

All excellent, John.
I agree with the others, the light on the third flowing into the dark background works very well.

Yep, me too! They are all great images, but there is something really dramatic about the third!

John, they are all absolutely beautiful but the "gate house" just takes my breath away!

Thanks policy and Permie. I liked the little house (which is still lived in). It reminded me of a kind of cross between the DisneyWorld castle and a small cottage.
How are things in Tupperware-land? I've not been there for a few days now. ;)

All are really nice, but...number 1 is my favorite. Everything just comes together in that shot for me.

I'll add myself to the #1 is my favorite crowd. The gatehouse is gorgeous - like a wee castle!
Now tell me now cold you were so I won't be so jealous. ;)

If it is any consolation Athena, we were camping in Glencoe that night, and there was ice on the tent when we went to sleep. It certainly was cool even though I was fully dressed with thermal bits and bobs, and in a reasonable quality sleeping bag. :( Here's a link (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=2658369&postcount=193) that shows how warmly we were wrapped up. PS Don't panic - it's not an "in-tent" shot, but was taken while waiting for sunrise.

Thanks, I'm pleased with that one too. John, who was with me, couldn't even be bothered to get out of the car to take the picture - so I'm especially pleased at it turning out so well. ;)

Thanks JD. I'm very proud of being Scottish, and of just how beautiful the scenery is.
I agree, #1 is great!!
Thanks Ray. The wee house is very quaint.
Very nice
Thanks Geoff.

Another vote for #1 from me John...very fairy tale and the blue water reflection really sets the shot off for me.

Cracking shots John, number 1 & 2 is my favs (great composition with the small connifers in 2!). I've been down that road but it was very snowy when we were there and trying to find a spot to stop was very difficult (it was hard to know what lay under the snow just off the road!).

I would recommend another drive in nice weather then! Did the scenery not look beautiful under a covering of snow anyway?

What exactly is a "Gate House" in that first shot. It looks like quite the interesting little building. We plan on visiting the Fort Williams / Glencoe area when we come over. I've read that its a very scenic portion of Scotland.

It is common on a large country estate to have a small house at the entrance where I dare say, the staff would check on who was allowed in and so on. I don't know for definite the situation with the house in the photo, but there certainly was a small road that continued past the house. The area is definitely scenic, and if you look around the first few pages of this forum, then you'll see a number of threads from a Scottish POTN meeting in the area last weekend.
Thank you too Richard.

Thanks Sie. :)
1. I liked the composition that I saw in the viewfinder, and the leadin from the edge of the water looked nice. To be honest, it never struck me that the building was so centred.
2. Thank you, and I'm glad the scum looks more like sand.
3. I'm pleased with the way that the light turned out with this one. I felt that the harshness complemented the strong curves and lines of the dam.

It did look really amazing John and gave the place a completely different feel to the way you have captured it. It also made driving quite treacherous (we saw a car that had lost control and gone down into a ditch on that very same trip.. I think the snow caught a lot of folk out).
