Because they are so beautiful.
I went back to the Naturepark Yesterday and found some more active swan's, hope you like them.
All shot with the 10D and the Sigma 80-400 OS.

Nice shots Frank! Great job on all the subtle whites on #2.
Man, I wish we had one of those Nature Parks around Boston. We've got a little zoo, and lots of great birding sites thanks to the ocean, but none of those Nature Park/Deer Preserve/Wildlife Parks. :(
If I hadn't spent so much on my 10D I could afford to travel, but...

Scottes, we need to get together some day and hit the nature trails on the Cape :) I've never done it with a camera,. but I remeber taking some hikes as a kid with my dad... just the beaches are fantastic,. especially this time of year before all the tourist show up.
Great Swans. You've got two species,. is the top one a "trumpeter"?

It's a deal. We'll just have to wait until the weather gets a little warmer and/or the winds die down. Oh, and I guess we'll have to wait for one of your cameras to show up. I'm not so happy about going out if you're going to be carrying that Mk II and the Sigma 500 though. :(
I was out at Great Meadows today. 2 mergansers, a few ducks, and all of a sudden about 400-500 geese came swooping in - right where I was standing 10 minutes before... :)

Nice Swan shots. I wish I had some here. We have a lake in the city park called Swan Lake! Guess what? NO SWANS. :D

Frank,
Really nice captures. Have not see a wild swan up here in a long time. Wonder why :?: :?:
Scottes and CDS,
Hop in the car and drive up to Montreal. Real easy drive ( head North and hang a left and the big bridge) and you can see first hand our selection of challenged waterfowel.

We could do that. The drive might take a while, since we'll be stopping often to shoot some birds - we'll be doing scientific research on my waterfowl Distance-From-Ian theory.
If my theory is correct, then you'll have to meet us halfway - we'll be laughing too hard.

It would be nice to see normal fowl. However if I meet you half way then I could affect those birds in that region. This could spread nation wide. But what the hell, it would be worth the chance. Boy, would DU get POed at me
Drag out the map and name a place half way and I'll con Sheldon into riding shotgun. Pity the poor town. Instead of "Mothers, hide your daughters, the boys are back in town" it will be "Folks hide your fowl, here comes Ian"
Serious guys, we should try to set it up. Just need some advance notice to make sure there isn't a race scheduled the chosen dates.

Well, I've got the weeks of April 19th and May 24th off.
Heh, first week-long vacation in 5 years and I'm gonna spend it with Ian... Audubon will never let me renew...

I actually might be in Ontario the end of April.. (lake Huron)
..not yet sure though..
But really,. there are a bunch of us yankees within about an hour or two of eachother (Mass, RI, Conn) not to mention a few NYers.. we should figure out what the best nature trek in the area is for at least a good long day trip.
Ian,. looks like you'll have to do a bit more driving..
If your not scared of Downtown... I have a nice fold out bed in the living room :)

@mancer
Shutterspeeds were arround 1/800's not really enough to really freeze their rapid movement, but due to the weather the only option unless I have to pump up the ISO. (now 200)

they are beautiful shots Frank, especially the middle one
Scotte, I would ask Sheldon what Ian was really like (he met him a few days ago) before arranging that trip
he could he hannibel letcher (whatever) just waiting to put 'photographers' under his floorboards
and bring them out (dead) whenever he needs to get funny weird shots

maybe let someone know your whereabouts at all times ?
anyway.... 'duck'...... with all that shotting going on
:p
