I want to format and reinstall my Vaio to 'factory fresh' in advance of selling it as got a new one for work, but how do I ensure I don't lose all my email? I basically want to back it up, including all the saved stuff in the folder structure, and then import into my desktop machine.

Search for any *.pst files - they contain all of your outlook info. Usually the file name for a personal (not business/corporate) file is either outlook.pst or personal.pst.

I see where they are but I have tried that method, i.e. copy and add to new location, in the past and never had any luck, as if there are other files that are held elsewhere. Is that correct, or is all in the one .pst file?

Outlook > file >import export > 'type .pst (select all folders) > select destination for .pst
import same as export but stand backwards.
import from another file > select .pst
