Stav I much prefer the composition of this image to your other WSM pier shot (which I've only just spotted). It's a pity you didn't have a better sunset to go with it. Definitely worth revisiting if you get the chance!

I will no doubt, i wanted to wait a bit longer till it got darker too but then there was a risk of the tide coming up and that wouldnt have been to healthy for me or my freind :)

 That happened to me at the weekend - was on some rocks and I knew the tide was coming in. but I was watching the waves break on the rock I was standing on and failed to notice that the small gap I had jumped across to get ther had become a bigger gap

Dude, you are right, it's not a bad picture! Compositionally its a good picture, you made a good photograph from what you had to work with. Sometimes you have to wait for the light and sometimes the light just doesn't happen. If you have the chance you go back again and maybe the light does happen this time, that's the way it goes;). (and thanks for looking at my flickr stream! Glad you liked them)

I think that shot would be fine with the light you had available.
When the light gets like this I like to go with smaller aperture and longer exposure, and if possible expose twice and composite.
The main thing this image suffers from is it is overall soft so a tripod is a must here I would think.
Looking at what the light looks like I would have gone with f16-f18 and that may have yielded you a lot greater DOF that would have allowed you to focus somewhere near the middle of the pier and still get the structure at the far end a lot sharper.
You probably had good focus but the slightest movement will kill the shot.
These shots beg for mirror lock up and a remote trigger or at least use the timer and pull the trigger very softly and release it very softly and remove your hand slowly and then don't move at all while the shutter is open.
Compositionally I agree it is a good shot, maybe I would have moved slightly to the left of where you were just to see some light between the legs of the pier at the far end where it all just goes to black. But I like your choice none the less.
Stay with this pier, it will reward one day.
I love pier shots.
