I was inquiring about 10d at Best Buy today. They said they were out of those and were unlikely to get those anymore because a newer version of 10d will be coming out this May. A Canon rep (who worked in their printer section - hence, not directly involved with cameras) told me that the new model will likely have a new sensor - couple of megapixels bigger and that I could look for the details on the canon website.
There is nothing on the cancon website of course. Anyone know anything about this?

The 10D is not discontinued. Best Buy has discontinued carrying them as they are evidently too hard for them to get. You can buy one right now from B&H PhotoVideo at: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=277768&is=REG
Buy a prosumer camera from someone who specializes in the business and not from some sell-everything store that carries vacuum cleaners and washing machines next to their camera equipment.
That being said there will eventually be a new 10D released either in the fall of this year or spring 2005, but definitely, absolutely NOT in May of this year. Canon does not pre-release any information about their cameras. A higher pixel count would only be a rumor.
That salesperson at BestBuy told you an untruth, either from their own ignorance or the internal ignorance of their storefront.

Those intellectually challenged folks were likely talking about the 1D Mark II, a completely different camera, due to ship in Apr / May.

I'm guessing that this is someone talking about something they know nothing about.
If in fact that there was going to be a new 10D coming out in May then we would be getting some rumors from many other sources given that we are almost half way through March.
Canon has already announce the MKII which is coming in at 8.5ish MP. I would find it odd that they would be releasing another camera in the same range before the MKII has even hit the streets.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Perfection is so simple, but beautiful. :)

So, all the chances are that there will be a replacement fo the 10D within a year? And it's likely to be more than the current version 6MP?
I suspect that you are bored to death with the speculations about a 10D replacement. But I'm dying to have a DSLR. It's not something I can afford right now, but I'm willing to go further in the debt just to have a camera like 10D. However, if there will be an improved version within a year then I should, probably, just wait a little bit longer.

I hope you're right, that a new 10D will come out this time next year.
Since I'm in digital, I changed every two years (ok... I'm at my second digital cam now... not very much of a tradition). ixus 300 in 2001, G3 in 2003, 10DMarkII in 2005... nice series...
I'd love to have a DSLR (so I can continue to use my 4 lenses from my EOS500 bought between 95 and 99)
I'm beginning to talk my wife into it slowly... If I have good arguments ... (the lenses are a good beginning: look honey only 1500 Euro for the cam, no need to buy lenses, I have them already...) Then when I have the cam... why not buy better lenses (look honey it's only 1000 Euro for this fantastic lense... imagine all the great pictures when can take of the kids (very good argument)) and so on...
Then comes 2007 : perhaps something like a 1DMarkIIIorIV (only 4000 Euro for the cam (difficult that one...))
I'm sure some of you understand the difficulties I'll have...

With all technology-driven products, which is what DSLRs have become, there is always the newer, bigger, faster coming soon. Canon has been giving many of their digital cameras a one-year marketing life. You can wait and wait, but sooner or later you've got to make the plunge and realize that whatever you buy will be 'obsolete' in a short time. But it will still give you the quality that it did when you got it.
Hope this helps
Have Fun

And the year after that and the year after that and the year after that.
If you want one then buy one. As CTG says there will always be a newer, bigger, better one on the horizon.
If you're an average consumer photographer (not shooting professionally) then by all means get the current 10D. It will rival anything you can do with film and I suspect most consumer photographers will have their current 10D's for years to come. Most people will never need anything more than what the 10D currently has to offer and I suspect that most won't use half its features and really could have done well with the Drebel.
I always remember a friend who had this old, old, OLD 286 computer with no hard drives or anything. Yes, and the green screen monitor. He would not upgrade to the 486. "I hear they're coming out with a 586," was his reasoning, "I'm going to wait for that."
I wonder if he's ever bought that upgrade yet.
Get the 10D. You will not regret it.

Jim,
Thanks for a response. You almost made me reach my credit cards ;)
But then I decided to wait till tomorrw and see if I still feel that way.
By the way, you mentioned the Digital Rebel and I decided to take another look at it. As I understand, the most important differences between the DRebel and the 10D are the absence of the mirror lock up and restrictive selection of AF and metering modes on the DRebel. I really like landscape and low light photography. I wonder if it's going to be a big problem for me if I get a DRebel.

I totally agree, same story with computers. But the fact that they are selling better computers now does not make your computer "obsolete". It does a job that it was intended, and that's what counts.
I for one am planning on using my 10D for a years to come (if I will stop cleaning my mirror and sensor with unappropriate means :-))
