View Full Version : Spell Checker (is it possible)

Is it me or is there an increase in the number of people who either find it difficult to spell, or are too lazy to check over their spelling?
I've noticed in other forums that i sometimes visit that they have a built in spell checker which underlines words when they are mis spelt.
Could the forum incorporate something like this?
Thanks in advance.

It's actually "misspelled". "Spelt" is a type of wheat. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spelt)

Actually Firefox already has a spell checker...
And BTW - Spelt is now an acceptable version of spelled. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/spelt

It's part of forum life; makes me cringe, but won't make me stay away. Most of the forums I'm a member of have spell checker; if it's anything like MSWord, it ain't enuf for those who just can't spell or type!
There are worse things.

There IS a spell checker. I see it above and to the right of the text box I am typing into right now. The little ABC with a check mark.
I use IE6, perhaps it is not an option in other browsers.

I use IE7 and the ABC icon in the Quick Reply dialog box requires ieSpell downloaded and installed. I use a similar icon in the Google toolbar of my browser instead, but as English is a foreign language to me, I use the more powerful grammar checker of Word

whitedragon. In no way did i mean to offend you or anyone else who is dyslexic. The main reason i bought up the point was because I've noticed on some forums that i visit that as i type and make a spelling mistake it would underline it in red, informing me that I've made an error.
POTN is a great community, and its beauty lies in the fact that it unites people from all walks of life, and who all share one passion.. Photography. (It isn't even just based around Canon users but we won't tell the Nikon users that).
I appreciate your input, and i'm sure you'll be here for a long time to come.

I don't think anyone will give you any major grief about spelling. This is an international forum, so some members have language difficulties. Personally, I don't have any problems, but, then again, I'm a teacher. :)

My wife is dyslexic, and this caused me a lot of anguish when I introduced her to computers. I eventually learned quite a bit about dyslexia - and how to deal with it, of course.
Once I realized she had dyslexia I installed some spell checkers and grammar checkers and she put forth an effort to use them and learn from them. They're annoying as hell if you ask me, and she certainly agreed but still worked with them. They've helped her immensely, and over time her spelling has improved to the point where she no longer needs a spell-checker - she deals with the few mistakes she makes now, but they are far less than she used to make. They've also helped her reading - something that was painful when she met me, but now she reads quite a bit.
But a spell checker isn't going to help if you don't put forth an effort to spell. No spell checker is going to correct "ppl" when you mean "people" nor will a grammar checker know what to do with a complete and utter lack of punctuation. You must put forth an effort to spell correctly. Using words like "iv" and "cos" and "ppl" just makes you look lazy, not someone who has dyslexia.
But if you put some effort into it you may find that these tools lessen the effects of dyslexia on you. They certainly worked for my wife.

is it really getting in the way of anyone when it comes to the purpose of the forum??
Just overlook it and be glad you have somewhere to come to when you have a camera issue or question...

Don't let it get to you,.
though it is a tad repetitive, (there must be at least 2,365 posts on this forum that jab at my own dyslexia)
My defence was always to make it fun,. humor makes the worst things easier.
Now aside from one or two malcontents out there, 99% of comments aimed towards me re: typing/spelling/dyslexia are just all part of the comradery and having a good time.

My Mac has auto correct switched on in preferences, so in Safari (as opposed to Outlook Express for Windows), my errors are highlighted as I type- easy to cure.

My spell checker is a dictionary, but sometimes I freeze when looking up a word. I need to study alphabet again!
