This is bread and butter stuff for photographers and I can understand people not posting their images for you just to copy their creative ideas; after all it is a photographer's creativity that makes them stand out from the pack. Yes, by all means look at others work for inspiration, also don't just rely on what others have done - look for locations where you can get creative etc...
I shoot promo shots for bands as well as live shots. There are many factors to consider - the look and feel of what the client wants, style, location, budget etc - seriously the best suggestion is to pick up some magazines (not just music) and have a look there - they are full of different types of these shots; pick up mags catering to a few different styles of music too so you get a wider cross section of material to think about.

There are some photogs. who do, they just aren't around recently...they all use their watermarks/logos/signatures plastered all over their stuff because of copy problems...Some of their work is Grammy Stuff, other work might be associated with Miss USA Contests and the Oscar associated materials...You can understand why there isn't much posted, up front this week...posed portfolio photography is the bread and butter of the industry...It's done in private, and obviously stays private...
Hang around here more often...participate in the critiques and comments with us and you might make some contacts and get lucky...

guys thanks for replying... first off... Im not looking to "steal" photos, im not looking to even borrow them, im not looking to take ideas either.. what im looking for is Insperation...shots to get ideas from.. i have never done this and i have a few ideas but like 99.99% of the others here, i am just looking for insperation from others. I know of the bread and butter and i honestly dont see the difference between looking at pics posted here, google or in a magazine. As you can see, I have over 3000 post and i have never taken anyones style or ideas.
Well, thanks for replying anyhow. much appreciated.

The best "promo" shots I've ever gotten of a band were candid stuff. The posed stuff always looks, well, "posed"...

I currently have sold two sets of pictures for promo purposes, but they're not very interesting. The story for both is that I shot them "just for fun" backstage, and they got bought afterwards.
I did a "real" promo shoot last weekend, but I cannot publish those pictures quite yet (I'll have to get final approval from the band).
Anyway, here are some pictures from the first two "sessions":
#1 Mokoma:

#2 Stam1na:

Actually, the #2 was modified a bit from what is presented above before I sent it to the client.
I'll post the results of the first "real" promo shoot as soon as I get a chance.

Some of mine. All shot backstage after the gig.
Basically, I just put the band somewhere, and let them 'loosen up'.
