Right before I went to bed last night, I noticed smoke in the sky. I followed it to it's source and got a chance to shoot an apartment fire. There were no injuries or fatalities -- though it was a heck of a fire. At one point, the building became so full of water that the pressure blew the front door off the hinges and out into the front lawn, followed by a tidal wave of water that washed into the street.

If I had any doubts about spending the extra cash to get the 2.8 version of the 70-200IS instead of the 4.0 version, this shoot erased them. Backed against the ISO 1600 wall at 1/15th of a second, there is simply no way I could have done any kind of telephoto work with an f/4.

EXIF should still be intact in all the photos. :) All shots were tripoded, though with the telephoto shot, the tripod was used more like a monopod.

Awesome shots.... Not much going on for a fire though. I guess I am used to seeing more firefighters around doing stuff.

Not something I would ever do (follow smoke to the fire), but I enjoyed the pics. Thanks for sharing.

OK, so I downloaded Openda so I could look at the EXIF of pictures like this. So how do I use it? I tried right clicking and going to properties, but all it tells me is the size of the picture...
these are GREAT shots BTW....

Hehe I just saw that first pic in the Lincoln paper at work the other day. Do you work for the Journal Star? How long have you lived in Lincoln? I've been stuck here for 12 years....but I don't mind. Lincoln is quiet and clean.

The first shot is simply amazing in my eyes, I would frame a poster sized print of that.
Awesome journalism shots.
