This whole not being able to find the 1.8 anywhere is frustrating me. The USM metal mount and scale as well as the 1.4 vs 1.8 is starting to apeal to me.
I'm tempted to ebay for an MK1 but those are selling for 140 and if i'm gonna spend 140 on a lens that is 10 years old i may as well just get a 300 lens that is brand new...or something.
Hmmm, decisions decisions. The 1.4 firecracker lens thread has shown me the incredible DOP which is very cool... are the optics much better other then that?

Timmy-
Yes, no doubt it is a better lens. It's a better build, has real USM and is a taste faster as a bonus. That does not make the 1.8 any less of a deal, but to be honest with you, after I get the MKII, I will be getting the 50mm 1.4 lens and relegating the 1.8 over to the 10D & D60 bags. Somehow attaching a $60 lens to a $4500 camera just seems wrong. ;)
In reality I want it for the real USM. The 1.8 will not be able to keep up with the speed of the MKII and is just not practical.

You won't go wrong with the 50/1.4. The only thing it doesn't do well is IR shots. Other than that, if you have the bucks, the 50/1.4 is the way to go.
Optically, the 50/1.4 becomes extremely sharp at f2 and smaller. The 50/1.8 (either I or II) doesn't become extremely sharp until about f4 and smaller.
Bokeh - the 50/1.4 uses an 8 blade aperture, the 1.8 has 5. The background blur of the 1.4 is superior to the 1.8.
If you need the bargain of the 50/1.8 II, just back order it from B&H and you'll get it at the best price out there probably within a couple of weeks. If you bite the bullet and go for the 1.4, you won't be disappointed (unless you want to put an IR filter on it).
Good luck with the decision.

Well, it's simply a matter of being impatient...at least thats what i'm worried about.
Deep down i know i want the 1.4 i just dont know if i'd notice the difference. But thent thats what i said about the rebel vs 10d and i vowed never to make that mistake again (dont get me wrong, my camera is my baby).
As for the IR, i do intend on getting into that but the lens i'd buy it for would be the one in which i use most which i'm assuming is going to be the 28-135 that i intend on getting shortly.
Or further down the road if i get the 1.4 heh.
The truth is and i said it in my 50-500 vs 100-400 thread is that when i buy a lens, i intend on keeping it for a long time. If i get just two years out of a $300 lens then i'm getting my money worth.
I'm gonna wait it out i think, i still owe best buy $700 on my camera, and if i just wait till my next paycheck that could be paid off completely...or i could just pay $100 a month for 7 months (0 intrest 12 months :D).
I really just need more patients, i just am growing tired of carrying around lenses thta are such crap. I know it's not my technical ability when i see photos that are soft or...just not what i'm looking for.
