It just worked out that way Steve...While Post Processing the selection, I got carried away, and couldn't stop...

Chris, helped me with pointers in NN and PS, and the conversion ratio improved...I assumed some would be sorted out by the band...they liked them all...

John Gongrats dude, they look Great, hope they like them and if they done then theyre blind, lol. Well done mate.

Thanks James for the compliment...The band guys are quite busy these days and didn't have time to complain...Just positive feed back from them, is all.

Congrats!
I'll check the pics out later...
Thanks Rene', use the slide show feature in the top upper right hand corner of the album page...enjoy...

Thanks lightofsound,
The band is particular about their photos, but chose not to choose from the set...

I'm just getting back to web design, previously I just worked with PageMaker (Since 1989), neglected to use my Web design Software for nearly 10 years...Now it's time to catch up with you tech. guys. I'll look into gallery2...I'll check with Taygull for more advice on this stuff, when he gets back.

Nicely done John. Good work.

Main Man from Branson,
Thanks for the compliment, I spent the better part of a week post processing...It worked out AOK...
Thanks again Basil.

Yup, there's a lot of them, but a good few are the same shots. Same angles, focal lengths, looks like they were shot in continous. There's no really tight shots of the band members.
I think you need to be a little more meriless about editing, imho.
Looks like a fun time though.

Thanks for checking them out, dkord...
On the assumption that you mean merciless (typo?) about editing, I was losing sharpness and noise/grain surfaced with even further enlargement...
And yes, they are almost all taken form the same location, (my seat, off the the side of the stage.)
I also used only one lens...a prime, Canon 85mm 1.8...(venue restrictions.)

Could only shoot within moments of good lighting.

Also, this actually is a study in Post Processing in PS from RAW...The band liked them all, so they posted them...
So, yes, I agree with you on everything we covered...

They'll be back at the venue this summer, so I may get another shot at the opportunity...We'll see.

Again thanks for pointing to the important issues we all face at the shows.

Best to use the Slide Show feature in the upper right corner of the Album page...

I'm game, on the link request...is the link above the actual link I could use? I haven't done a thing, at my "myspace" yet...Still have to deal with a recent dental emergency...I'll check "my space" out shortly to be certain of the link to forward to them...

If you're the Band's Photographer, couldn't the manager get you into the photog's pit? Or closer?

This is what I mean about being merciless: you give the band the good ones not the marginal ones.
You have the same shot on several frames, for instance:
IMG_20070120_4228.1.jpg and IMG_20070120_4228.jpg the first one of the two works best.
Look at the 3 images after them you can group them with these other 2: IMG_20070120_4291.1.jpg and IMG_20070120_4408.1.1.jpg all 5 shots is of the same guy, same stance, same expression, same lighting, everything other than one cropped tighter. Of the 5 I would say IMG_20070120_4408.1.1.jpg is the most interesting (cleaner shot and different expression) and the only true keeper. What I would of like to see since you're so far away is a portrait crop of him and that huge video screen in the background with him on it. You see a shadow of that on IMG_20070120_4291.1.jpg.

Why give the band the plain one's?
Sure it's their web site but as a photographer those shots reflect on your work more then their music.
As a viewer who doesn't know the band or never seen your work, when I saw the same shots several times I quickly grew bored.

(sorry for the text size, I copied and paste the image files and it kept the site's font size)

Very good questions...
I'm just a regular patron to the venue, cause it's just down the road from my home... I'm not the band's photog. and had no special privileges... although I could have/and probably should have chosen to sit in the front row...I did get to the show several hours before the start of the show to get the best seat...
There is no pro pit, ever, and the venue has their own pros from the local newspaper that they own... so outside pros are not seen too often... The venue owns TV stations and the regional cable networks...they also video record the shows...

I gave the band several versions of the post processed photos anticipating they be further selected for posting onto their web site...each one has a different post processing formula...the noise reduction, skin tones and resizing are at issue with those particular photos, it was to be their choice to choose...they like them all, said so, and chose to post them this way.

I couldn't crop any closer because these are already heavily cropped...many of these are cross stage shots...the stage is over 70 feet across... The big screen image was huge and only small portions of it fit into any photo...the simultaneous, same image of the bass player on the big screen was not an intentional shot...I found it later in post processing.

Using the band's "slide show" feature, the pics actually tell a story of the performance...other than that, I certainly agree, that the first page looks repetitive, even before the set is viewed in slide show mode...that's why the slide show method is best for viewing.

Well done John; I'd be asking the band for photo credentials next time they are back in town.
Where do the other pro photographers shoot from in the venue. Would it be possible to get up close at the front of stage for the first few songs, work the angles and then once done either shoot from side stage or head back to your seat and sit back and enjoy the performance?

The venue is very supportive of the media arts with educational and scholarship programs year round...dozens if interns come and go from various local Universities and schools... while the pros show up, take their pics and I see them in the local paper the next day... they use the long lenses up close and sometimes even flash...
The venue also has extensive arrangements for the disabled and senior citizens groups...sections are saved for special interest groups...

Yes, getting up close for me is an option, If I buy the ticket six or seven months ahead of the show date...the seating choice for this show was of my own choosing... however, I've been getting better results when we have a mosh pit or I manage to get a front row seat...It's different every show...some have reserved seating, other times there is a pit, or a dance floor or I buy a sky box seat...

There are many cameras at every show...I just happen to live just down the road from the venue and manage to attend more shows than most...I'm also retired, therefore days and times are not an issue for me...

I am open minded and often, in hind sight I consider the alternatives...however, unless I get a 10 year contract engraved in granite, I'll just continue to plug away, honing my skills.

Some nice images! Saw and commented on a few of them on POTN, so no need to do that again...

IMG_20070120_4072.1.7.jpg is cropped and processed a *lot* better then the one posted on the forum.

A few things: As mentioned a few posts back, a lot of images are 'overlapping': Same guy, almost same stance. If I have something like that, I tend to deselect all but the very best.
Better to show 10 good images, then 15, when 5 of those are so-so. People tend to remember the bad ones ;)

On the file naming: To avoid problems, don't us a point (".") in the name.
Also, might be an idea to change the not too specific "IMG" into something a bit more meaningfull like "JSP" (John Stoy Photograpy) :D
You could consider a watermark... And ask for credentials.

I know it is exciting when others like the band really appreciate your work. Take advantage of it for getting better access to other bands and venues.

Gentlemen, Thank you...

Geez, John, what's with the big font? Well, I suppose you are excited ... again! It's these kinds of experiences that keep us working so hard to get better, eh?

Dwight, wouldn't you know it...Had to figure out how to present this new Thread without a picture in the starting post...
Guessed the big font would take up some eye catching space. I know... in hind sight it looks a bit lame, and probably should have been one of the other "best" pics from this large set.

There were some issues with a few pics... and I left the selection up to the band... I figured on maybe 50+ pics being posted...didn't expect 77.

Congrats John,

I know it is exciting when others like the band really appreciate your work. Take advantage of it for getting better access to other bands and venues.

Thanks Chris,

I'm considering alternative options to shooting select bands...however, it will require lots of consideration from the venue...

Got an Email from the band, yesterday... and again they say, they really like these pics... I'll be communicating with them in the near future regarding their summer performance here... I'll PM you this weekend with an update ...

Re: Duplicates
They did put them in their own order, but they didn't select out any, that I assumed they would...Time is obviously an issue for them and I should have done the sorting for them up front...
I'm with you 100% on the fact that "present the very best, that's all" it's the Cardinal rule of business...My communication with them was "well, let's just say", a bit vague.

Re: Numbering and Watermark
I have every intention of finally changing the numbers to simply my name, (Presently, I use the Dewey Decimal System, to differentiate the level of post processing and prioritization... But I haven't perfected the exact key codes ...

And I'm all for the watermark, Rene'... It should be no brainer, that a watermark has to be on every photo... Everybody has one... It's been on my to do list, for the past two months, I'll be getting to it before the next show, for sure.

This is the better crop Rene' refers to above;

http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l60/stoy17/TaquilaSunrise-Eagles/IMG_20070120_4072.jpg

Here is another crop job...To fit him into the pic I tilted the camera...then I had to crop him vetically...It's almost an eye illusion...and gives me a headache when trying to align this picture visually...

Chris says Hi...saw him at Christmas, He's with UPS at the Airport in Philadelphia.

Good "eye" emtp. regarding my last name.
...Chris is a Stoy. The name is Polish, and goes back several centuries spelled both ways...It means "Stand" or "Stop". It depends what century the Stoj's or Stoy's emigrated to the US... The Polish borders kept switching around after old wars and some changed the spelling, other's didn't. For pronunciation reasons, my DBA is Stoy. My older brother changed his name permanently to Stoy, way back, when he was in the military.

emtp,

Try to swing by and catch Tequila Sunrise at Penn's Peak in August...It's only $13.00 if you buy your ticket now...

Here are the links to the venue and the schedule to date...The schedule is updated constantly...they will end up with dozens more for the year.

You can listen to this station on your computer, in dial-up mode or cable mode or any other speedy way, 24/7 and it's free...It's almost all commercial free too.

Have fun with it.
