Well I just recently got a Canon 5D with a couple of lenses. I've been into photography for a while now but just now getting into the real manual/pro stuff. Been trying to learn settings for dark concert settings and action shots without using a flash. Anyway, last night my band and I had some free time so I goofed around trying to get a hang of the camera and settings. Happy with these first tries. It was really dark to begin with because a few of our lights weren't hooked up yet, so when we get them all hooked up they'll turn out better. Taken with a Canon 50mm lens at 30 / 1.8 and AWB on.

wow! i love that last one. very cool.
one suggestion would be to wait until he is done tuning the guitar until you fire away (as in the first shot). but good images and a nice start. i look forward to seeing more.

Say J.,
Welcome to the forum...Your pics are right in the ball game with composition and subject choice... Looks like you bring along some experience in art...
Time permitting, share some of your experience with us...
Off topic:
I had a friend from Nacogdoches, who joined our real estate company back in 1981 at Walden on Lake Conroe...Just wish I had a DSLR back then.
Glad you joined our forum.

Jcanfield, Welcome a 'Board' ha ha see what i done there lol, great start here,
Just a tip number your pics(even tho there are only 4) oh and try post more in a set, any way whats your band called? where were they taken? they seem very dark but as you said about the light i look forward to seeing your work with more/better lights, number 2 is great captures a lot of energy and as john said (im guessing he's referring to the last image with the art comment) arty with the last image which is pretty darn sweet, in the secoond shot try getting rid of the Mic stand IMHO i find it a lil annoying, and in the 3rd shot its an alright shot but try not to get half a guitar head, allways try to get it in unless going close to the player or whatever.
Cool set, and keep at it dude.
Rock on

Welcome as well.
Nice frming nd timing, but I would like 'em a bit lighter...
Also, pity about the cropped feet in # 2, and I'm not too sure I like the flare...
Also, might I suggest turning AWB off? It sucks IMHO.
Set the WB to tungsten, since that is the dominant light source. The way I figure, any color cast is *meant* to be there.... If you shoot RAW a very dominant cast can be relatively easily corrected afterward.

Thanks for the replies. This is just a band that I play with at my church for a weekly Wednesday night college service. They were taken in our auditorium. Yeah, the guy with the electric is actually our drummer but is also an incredible guitarist. I just had the guys goof off so I could test settings out before practice, so that's why some of the framing is off, just focused on the overall settings. We play tonight and I'm going to try and take some better ones during sound check. I've had a simple point and shoot Sony DSC-W1 for a while now and have done some fun stuff with it. 99% of the pictures here (http://frontlet.com/pgallery/) are taken with it. Alot of those have been photoshopped some. I use it quite a bit. I enjoy using the timer and setting up my own shots and then getting in them, so if you look at my pictures on my site even the ones I'm in I took. The ones I posted above were only tweaked a little to bring out a little more color. Anyway, I'm really glad I found these forums. They have been VERY helpful so far! Alot of nice people and good info. I'll be posting more soon.
And John, that's funny. I'm 24. Born in '82. Lived in Nac my whole life.

Some nice shots in the gallery: I like the crane with a bit of motion blur, very nice feel, and the railroad track with the train just around the corner (I think that's it)!
