Recently visited Pittsburgh, PA in December and was captivated by the lights the city had to offer. Rule number one - night shots of a city - bring a tripod, I left it back home...therefore this is the only shot that was promising enough to manipulate. I used the railing of a fence as the tripod - when life fails , you have to improvise. Anyone use surface tripods - what r yr thoughts - I hate luggin around a tripod wit me....tips appreciated too.

Looks cool.

I used every thing imaginable as a surfacr tripod....Pack of cigs, phone, build one with sand on beach, railing, ground..... It all works just as well.

Yes I have also used similar objects including the gate of a pick-up truck, rocks, beer boxes...lol

Thanks, though the bridge looks crooked, it's a memory I got to bring home.

carry a beanbag or duffel bag, and you can put the camera almost anywhere. You just need something to fluff up to get the lens at the right angle.

Infrared remote helps too, so you dont have to touch it to trigger it.

Thanks Mike - I like the idea of the bean bag- your right getting the lense at the right angle seems to be what is most challenging - but I can see the benefit of having a pliable tool to cushion my camera - good tip! Awesome - looks like I'll have my mind on bean bags today! Thanks a million.

Matter of fact I just bought the remote control yesterday! Great minds think alike...lol

I've set my camera in snow before, too... Pack it into a makeshift "stool" with a flat surface on top, it's great!

Or if I've wanted a super low angle of something, I set it in the snow and tilt up... hard to frame the shot when it's on the ground though ;)
