My first year awaiting the PMA -- Interesting reading in the rumors area.
The 1D MKII N (or equiv) will be added to my gear in 2007.
The drop-dead on adding it is roughly May to cover LAX tournaments.
Based upon your experience, should I wait until after the PMA to purchase?

Doubt you'll see a change in 1 series till next year.. 1DmkIIn is only a year old.

I do wonder if the banding issues will go away, and whether or not something interesting will come about -- I'll hang back until early May, based upon POTN input.
BTW, noticed that on your website you're posting lower-res 'proofs' unsuitable for theft-to-print; nice idea.

IF a 1D MkIIN replacement is announced, you might not see prices fall until the "potential" replacement camera actually hits the stores. So you definitely want to wait until after PMA, but right before the new camera hits the stores and consumers want to get rid of their "old" MkIIN bodies.

Thx - Nice Philly pics, BTW.
Philly definitely looks better in the dark.

BTW, did they let you take a monopod into the carshow?
Haven't been down to that in years.....

actually its coming up on 3 years old, the N version is hardly a "new model" but a rebadged 1d2 with a firmware update and new lcd amongst the changes.
Personally I bet the xti and 5d are the only current cameras that won't be replaced this month.
Yes, I would wait, if nothing else it will promt a lot of used ones on the market and you could grab a mint one for a lot less than now (assuming a new cam is announced)

There's nothing wrong with the current 1D2N uless you just have to have the latest and greatest. It's hard to improve on what's already an outstanding piece of kit. Maybe better noise control at higher ISO? If you need its feature set to get critical shots right now, why wait? The 1D2 didn't cease to be an amazing camera when the 1D2N came out. And the 1D2N won't cease to be a great camera when its replacement is announced. What is it you need your 30D isn't giving you?

Good questions.
The 30D will become my wife's primary body; I'll leave an EF-S f/2.8 IS on it, she'll walk around, take pics in available light and be happy. For the times we do travel, I'll set up one body with the longest lens I can muster for the wildlife, the other with either something wide/fast or the 70-200 f/2.8 IS so that we're very prepared, in advance, miss fewer shots and will not change lenses in the field.
The new body is for my sports shooting -- Deeper buffer, more FPS in RAW, both CF and SD. I absolutely would love to grab that body, right now, so really what I'm lurking for is the moment of price drop and/or someone on POTN to sell theirs after the 'new' thing comes out. (Hey, I could get lucky)
And, I saw the images coming from the 1DMKIIN - Stupid-great contrast, just knocked my socks off; I had no idea.......... I was hooked.
Finally, the more I get into the hobby, the more I realize I really need a backup body. If the 30D had to go in for service, or was lost/destroyed, I'd be very upset missing a week or two of shooting! (Yeah, I'll bet that goes away, eventually!)

Makes sense to me. ;)
Yeah, you should see a noticeable price drop in 1D2Ns if/when its replacement is announced. You could also get a great deal on a used 1D2 as well. Good luck with your buying decision.

I'd rather wait and let the price fall nowadays. Last year's cameras are pretty darn good.
My next body will be two or three generations newer than my 1DMKII.
I bought my 1D MKII just before the "n" came out and saved over $1000. from the early prices.

I'm hopeing the cost of the 1D2 or 1D2n drops low enough that I can finially get one. My reasons are; brighter and larger viewfinder, 45 point AF system and it would be really nice to put JPEG and RAW files on seperate cards. I guess I'll just settle back, enjoy a George Dickel #12 and Schweppes Bitter Lemon, and wait.

Like you, I am awaiting the PMA revealtions regarding the 1D Mk. II N's successor. The current rumours leave me with mixed feelings. However, I'm inclined to grab it right now as I got a quote AUD1250 lower than the RRP. On top of this, Canon has an AUD750 cashback if they receive the claim before 2007-03-31.
This is killing me!

not to mention best AF for sports and weather sealing - no reason a non-pro who wants these features and can afford one shouldn't press the button.

I like the name, 1D-Sports for the new II N. I'm there! Enough of the numbering system as is now.

Well, I bought my 1D MKIIn three weeks ago.....and I have 1500 low light gymnastics shots of my daughter that my D200 could have never managed. I could have waited. Thought I should....but gymnastics season will be over before PMA gear is on the streets.
You can wait, but at some point you gotta wonder what you're missing while you're waiting. So you might save $300 - $500 buy waiting around until May....cool, but unless you're gonna buy the new model (and the issues that go along with them) you might consider the opportunity costs of the delay.

Good point, if one can afford to consider that option.

I know what you mean -- I'm missing almost nothing; I coach the winter Basketball, so my wife takes the pics, which means I set it up and the hope+crop PP and I might get something.
Now, come May, that will matter to me; she's the team mom, I'm the team photog.
BTW, how long should I plan on spending with the 1DMKIIN to get comfortable with the controls? Take it out 1 day, 2?

You'll get most of it down pat in less than a week of playing with it. :)
