View Full Version : Do you shoot with your left or right eye?

I am left eye dominant which is inconvenient when attempting action shots since I can't keep track of activity outside the viewfinder.

What eye do you use? Has anyone re-trained their brain imaging system to overcome dominance of one eye?

If you were instructing someone on proper technique, would your advice include "preferred eye" for the viewfinder?

This isn't a poll. I'm actually looking for advice. :?

Im left handed and look with my left eye. I rotate clockwise (from my postiton - shutter button at the bottom) for portrait oriented shots.

It just came naturally that way

I am left-handed, but I learned a long time ago to adapt to a right-handed world. When I got into photography there was no such thing as a left-handed camera (still isn't). But those were the manual focus days, and some might argue that focusing with your left hand requires better motor skills than pressing the shutter.

Back to your topic - since I had to adapt, I never thought about it until now. I can only wink my left eye, so I don't know if that defines it, but it sure helped with photography :!:  Wait a minute - the emoticon winks with its right eye. That can't be me :!: Hey, Pekka, I want a left-eyed emoticon

Seriously, I think it is more difficult trying to use my left eye, because the right side of my face might get in the way of my shutter finger and all of the controls.

Left handed and left eye dominant. Left eye is well trained from the small-bore days. Now that was an expensive undertaking. My stocks and barreled actions were all custom made. McMillan used to build a hell of a rig. Wonder if he still does :?: :?:
maderito, you are right about keeping track of the action, as well as rocks and trees.

Just to clarify -- I'm actually right-handed and left-eyed.

Thus I'm suprised to see this thread drawing responses (so far) from a bunch of lefties.

Happy to share might left-eyed (and right-brained) view of the world with you guys.

I only shoot with the right, shooting with the left just blocks off too much of my vision

I usually shoot with the left eye closed but when tracking birds in flight, I found it easier to keep up with them by having both eyes open. The right eye tries to keep the bird in the viewfinder and the left eye tracks it since that's hard to do when just using the viewfinder.

When I had my analog camera, I use my left eye to shoot because my right eye is not very good. With digital camera and LCD screen, I no longer need to shoot with one eye.

Everyone is born right-handed, but only the greatest overcome it :!:

[Shields up]

Seriously, there also seems to be a high population of lefties in the IT field, which is the topic of a poll now active on the forum. Curious.

Right-handed and left-eye dominant. That's one reason I sucked at sports - batting was the only thing I could do, since my left eye was forward.

Pistol shooting drove me crazy, open sights on a rifle drive me nuts, so I was scope-only. I ended up being a hell of a bench-rest shooter since I could shoot lefty that way, but I found skeet shooting easier if I aimed at the machine.

It screws me up shooting, since I have to FORCE myself to go right-eye so I can track with the left. Drives me crazy, since if I don't have to track I naturally go left-eye. Then I have to remember to go right-eye...

Also left handed here, but like many others, I have adapted to a right-handed world. I still do many things as a lefty, but Iam also right hand dominant in many tasks. As far as the camera goes, I shoot with my right eye.

I'm surprised and maybe not so surprised that there are so many south-paws here. I think more artists tend to be left handed. Something about right and left brain, I think. I think about 10 percent of the population is left-handed. It seems to be a much higher percentage, here.

I'm right/right, btw. My dad is a lefty, though.

I'm right handed although a little ambidextrous (father was left-handed). I've never thought about eye dominance before and I've realised that my natural inclination is to use my right eye which I guess means right eye dominance. But my eyesight is much better in my left eye so I'm going to try to learn using that one - maybe I'll get better pictures.
It's amazing the stuff this forum makes you think about...

Left eyed, right handed......

You can check it like this:

- With both eyes open, stretch out your arm and point to something in the distance with your index finger.
- Now close your left, and keep your right eye open and check if you're pointing at the target with your right eye.
- Close your right, and open your left and check if you're pointing at the target with your left eye.

You'll notice that with one eye, you're pointing exactly at the subject and with the other eye you are pointing beside the subject.

I tried your test Jesper, but neither eye was right on, but the right was closer. Probably because my right eye is dominant, but bad.
I usually use my left eye because I can't focus properly with my right eye. Can't get glasses to fully correct it either. But when shooting action I usually use my right eye, so I can watch what is going on outside the viewfinder. I just trust the auto focus. If focusing is critical, like when I stop down to check DOF or something, I have to use my left eye.

I got the same results with the dominant eye test, neither eye was right on the target but the left one was closer. Back on topic I am left eyed and right handed. Maybe I should get my eyes checked...

Or were you just trying to hint to somebody about using the "search" tool?

I have a friend in the military and he told me what when they got recruits that were left eye dominant they would make them wear an eye patch on their left eye until their right eye became dominant.

I don't know how safe this is or if it was one of his wild tales but I think it would work.

PS I'm not suggesting you try this just any interesting tid bit

I am also colorblind and left handed (Left eye dominant). I have never heard of or met another person colorblind and left handed, i figured there had to be others but just never met one. It's nice to know i'm not the only one.

I usually shoot with my left eye, but if I am shooting sports I switch to my right so I can see past the camera & my field of view for any other action, or when panning to help keep the horizon level across the pan.

Left - no issues with tracking subjects when both eyes are open. It takes getting used to, but I also spent a good amount of time as a shooter.

I've noticed that my 75-300 USM at 75mm has the same magnification through my 20D, as the naked eye, so I keep them both open there are no focusing issues or distortion at all.

It makes it even easier to track the surf while watching individual surfers through the camera.
