Can you tell me in a nutshell the main differences between these three models, and which one you would prefer?
- Canon 1D
- Canon 1Ds
- Canon 1D Mk II N
Thanks !...

1D- 4mp, 8fps, 1.3x
1Ds- 11mp, 4fps, FF
1D MkII N- 8mp, 8.5fps, 1.3x
If I had a choice I'd take the 1D MkII N but it all depends on what you want to shoot and how much you want to spend.

I'd prefer the last one.
Then again, if you shoot a lot of studio or landscape, the 1Ds would be the better option...

So clearly the 1Ds is like a 5D supersized, or what not.
It would seem that the top two models for street photography would be the 1D and the 1D IIN.

I'll put it into simple terms:
Canon 1D:$$
Canon 1DMKIIN:$$$$
Canon 1DS (MKII):$$$$$$$$

The 1Ds has slightly lower resolution than the 5D. Unless you need the added features of a 1-series body, I'd prefer a 5D over a 1Ds for better resolution and noise control, along with lighter weight, better battery life, etc.
They're both available for under $2,500 these days, although the 1Ds is obviously available as second-hand only.

The 1Ds has been superceded by the 1DsMkII, but otherwise, yes-- it's a full frame sensor in a 1 series body.
Any 1 series camera is perhaps not the best choice for street work because they're big and bulky-- rangefinder cameras are generally considered to be the ultimate in street shooting equipment, but of course there are not any rules and if you can make things work then by all means go for it. If I was going to spend a lot of money on a street shooting rig I'd take a hard look at an M8-- I've heard problems reported but I've also seen some fantastic work coming from them. The combination of an M8 and a Noctilux f/1 lens is something I wish I had.

Actually it would be the 1DsMkII (16.7mp/3fps/FF) and the 1DMkIIn...
Of course, you might find yourself to be a bit happier with a 30D and the extra $2000 (compared to the MkIIn) or so put into nice lenses...

No, the 1D is dead, obselete, and inferior to the 1D Mark II, 1D Mark IIn, 1DS Mark II, and the 5D in regard to image quality. 4mp is pitiful too little resolution.

I rate them solely on image quality, from worse to best:
1D
1DS
1D Mark IIn
1DS Mark II
5D, best combo of price, fullframe, lowest noise, cleanest images in general.
In terms of ergonomics, responsiveness, build quality, the 5D is last.
For street you want the smallest body, the 5D. Plus it is relatively cheap so you can spend more on lenses....a great street kit is the 5D + 50L.

Thanks, that clarifies a lot of questions I had. You see, I have a very basic knowledge of the new 1D models (MkII and MkII N), and the 5D. Then I heard about the 1Ds. I had no way of placing it in the series, but the comments and points made above do make it very clear.
Thank you all.
