Highlights seem blown out on both pics. The frame doesn't really work for me either.

I really like that second one, I love the expression on his face and the lighting is dramatic. I agree the highlights are a bit blown but it seems to add to the moody effect.

Thanks; I am now doing a lot playing around with exposure, highlights and contrast.
