Tomorrow is the Blackwater National Wildlife Reserve Eagle Festival, free admission. Plenty of speakers and some great opportunities to get some birds of prey shots at one of the many demonstrations. There's a wildlife photographer speaking at one of the tents at 9am can't remember off the top of my head who.

We're going to hit up Bombay Hook on Sunday (weather depending). If anyone else is making the trip drop a line and we'll look for ya. We usually hit up Sambo's Tavern in Leipsic, DE for lunch.

Assuming weather remains cool, we're going to head over to Brookside Gardens for the 'Wings of Fancy' butterfly exhibit at 10am on Sunday. It's usually much warmer in the greenhouse for the butterflies.
Plenty of photo opportunities, bring macro and a macro flash if you've got one. They've been known to close early on warm days, get there sooner rather than later. Plenty of other stuff to shoot.

Hey MD people!!
I know this is not a "meet up" post. But it is kinda MD centric. I need a few (2-3) high end cars for a shoot. Porsche, Ferrari, Lotus... That kind of car. Does anybody know of one we can borrow? I only have one contact with one vintage 944. But I would like current or fairley new cars.
Thanks!
EDIT>>>> We can turn it into a meet up and have a group car shoot before I need them. I want to shoot at sunset. So after might be a problem in the dark.

I'm here at Conowingo right now with a 500 and it def feels too short. Try renting a longer Canon prime and Mb throw on a tc. When I get home ill upload a pic of the line of photographers all with super long lenses. There must have been over 50 ppl all with long primes. So jealous. :p
As to where at the dam to view... Drive down Shures landing road till you hit the parking lot where it dead ends. There is railing all along the river that overlooks the dam and islands in the water where the eagles roost. If I had a longer lens I could have gotten beautiful shots of them. I'm going to crop what I got and hope they are okay.

Dang, Tony - haven't seen you since the Baltimore Dollar Day shootouts! How's it going?
Anyway - you need to be at Exelon's Conowingo Fishing Park at the base of the dam on the south side (right bank), just off US 1. Take Shuresville Rd. off US1 to Shures Landing Rd, which ends in the park. It's basically a parking area along the river, and anywhere along there is good for spotting them. With the 70-200, even with TC, spend your time looking at the trees in back of the parking area, not out at the river. I met torvaterra there this afternoon, but didn't see anyone else.

We also drove around afterward on the road on the other side of the dam. There was a nesting area there with about 75 eagles clustered together in trees along the powerline cutaways. I haven't had a chance to process those photos yet though.

Thanks. Yeah, we did get a bit lucky. I just stayed right in the middle of the parking lot. There were eagles in the trees pretty much all day there. So I just sat there and shot those and then caught other eagles as they swooped in to land in those same trees. When I left, there were 4-5 eagles sitting within a few branches of each other.

Here's one of the trees on the other side of the dam that my wife and I saw from the road. Pulled over and walked under the power lines until we couldn't walk through the brush any further to snag a few shots. This was just one tree. There were about 3-4 trees that were just stuffed with eagles. In this tree alone, there are about 25-30 of them. Mix of mature and immature.

I've been out there the past several days and heading back out shortly. For any one considering coming out with less than heavy artillery, there's plenty of opportunity for flight shots with 400mm of reach on a crop body.

Hi Jon. I think you've got me mixed up with someone else. You and I met way back (winter '05-ish) at the Inner Harbor/National Aquarium meetup but the Dollar Day shootout doesn't ring a bell.
Thank you for the advice, I may try to find some time to head out there and give it a go. Heavy artillery (500mm+) isn't in my budget so 400mm will have to do.

Last week there were 100s literally. Saturday there weren't as many because they had the spill gates going strong and covering all the rocks, so they had to hang elsewhere. Aponi06, as for how long they are there, my 1st time every going to Conowingo Dam was in early March '09 and there were still a few Eagles around, but not like this time of year and December and January. So you have time to go and see them, just make sure the family is well dressed if you go because it's colder near the dam than inland.
I got some fly overs Saturday and the typical Eagles in the trees (4 of them).

Didn't have access at Conowingo but we were there at 8am. Had coffee and hot water carafes set up on the picnic table but didn't talk to anyone but a few birders. The place was mobbed with photographers, I didn't bother to go asking everyone who they were.. :)
Guess I should start describing myself again, but I really didn't expect to see so many people.
Had one, maybe two shots at the eagles from 8-10. Too far away. My 400x2x1.6 (APS-C Sensor) was still not as close as I had hoped.

I was there most of the day Friday and sun up to sun down Saturday and didn't get any useable eagle shots. Just far away landscape type ones with eagles in them. I'll post a few when I process them. The water from the spill gates was gorgeous though.

Love that shot of the GBH, Jon.
I was there on the 21st. There were probably 200 eagles there, mostly on the rocks and towers on the other side. Did get a few that flew by but I didn't get good shots (oof/motion blur/etc.) One landed in the tree above us and ate his/her fish. I took some shots of her, but the lighting was pretty poor and I wasn't pleased with the results.

Junior was very happy with his catch. I got a few shots too but not quite as good. Im thinking of going again this weekend. I mean, I really want to... I just dont have a lens for the shots I want to get there. I might go because I dont have anything better to do and its only 2 hours away. But I want to be there for sunrise again so Id have to camp out in my car.
Here is one of my shots:

Hey, I am wondering if anyone can recommend a camera cleaning service anywhere in the area? I have an old 5D that needs a pretty good cleaning.

Dollar day at the Aquarium was how I got started meeting up with you all. My hubby and teenager sons could not believe I was meeting people I talk to on the net. :) That was a long time ago and I've net up with Jon several times a year. Love seeing him. He's like the worst friend if you don't want to spend money. :)
Today at the temple at 4:30?

I resemble that remark! You don't want to get results, don't look at what other people use. And the last thing you asked me about runs under $15, tops, at Penn Camera (rubber lens hood for photographing through glass at the National Aquarium). Now, if you'll just get the RRS L brackets, you'll get a compact and veratitle flash bracket and interchangeability with Jim's and my tripods when you don't bring yours.
I am, however, looking at modding a thumbscrew so I can have a generic A-S plate that anyone can easily attach to their camera when they forgot their tripod (I didn't note her name at the Temple?).

I don't remember either. Thanks for the tip about the rubber hood. Getting it Tuesday, I hope. The trip is on Wednesday. I'm chaperoning 6 middle school girls. There will be 2 bus loads from the school I work at. Can't wait! Hope it doesn't rain, though. The Aquarium is so much fun, but walking from the Science Museum, getting lunch and then to the Aquarium may be difficult, and wet, with all my gear in one bag.

Aww thank you so much, really. I was so jealous of all of the other people there with their gigantic lenses. I was happy to get something useable but I cant help but imagine what it would have been like with an 800 or even a 600... to capture that eagle landing with it filling the frame, the spray of the crashing water flying around behind it, the detail of its feathers, seeing its eye catching light from the water. Sigh.

Suzy, I was at the Aquarium a couple weeks ago and saw that looooooooooooong line and though there must be a celebrity there, then found out it was $1 day at the aquarium. I had no patience, so I ended up at the Football State Championship game at Ravens stadium. Can you purchase the $1 tickets online?

The rubber hoods just screw into the filter threads and they are available in pretty much every filter size.

If I'm here, I'm in. Got an aero historians meeting at NASM Udvar-Hazy on the 21st, but other than that, I'm pretty open after the holidays. U-H has some really cool stuff to shoot, especially since they've opened the restoration facility there.

I heard that they are still there, just slightly less than earlier in the month. Besides eagles though there are a lot of herons and gulls too. Im in Bethlehem PA and I want to get down there again next week as well. Just not sure if I can swing it again as I was just there last month.

I'll be going through this weekend. I'll try to have Ann driving over the dam so I can man the binoculars and report back. But it's my home turf as it were, so no promises. They seem to peak around the first week of December and it's kind of a bell curve with about 2 weeks before and 2 after for the transients. There are some year-rounders though.

Sort of thought I might have seen a few dots on one of the pylons as we drove up, but I was at the wheel crossing the dam, so couldn't get a good look. Coming back down I had the 8x IS binocs on the area and didn't see any. So I'm thinking they're definitely on the down-side.

It seems like the number of all birds species are down this year. I don't see many of the birds that I normally see in my backyard; it could be because of the mild weather.

The 3 remaining stores are just open to liquidate, all will close after that is my understanding. I went to the Rockville and Laurel store last Saturday just to show my daughter, she'd never been to Rockville. It was not what i was 20 years ago. I'd only been a couple times in past ten years, spent lots at Penn years ago. Sorry to see them go, but it was inevitable.

Just an FYI: When there's a going out of business sale, they typically raise prices to liquidate and get as much money to satisfy their creditors. You may find some crap that's 10% off msrp price. Do some comparison shopping before you drop the doh and realize B&H had it $100 cheaper with free shipping.
Just One Man's Opinion.

I called on Monday to find out the price of a 7D body. It was listed at 1499.00 - 10% - 100.00 canon rebate. But when you added the sales tax it only came out to about $25.00 less than online. They only had one body left and it was the display model.

That would be a neat thing to see land or brought in. I went to Space Camp with our daughter about 5 years ago and saw one shuttle, and weeks later saw what ever one is in UH now. Now I'll get to see one more! I'm not sure what other one may exist elsewhere. I never thought I'd get to see and touch 3 of them. :)
Calumet bought Penn Camera a week ago and will keep the 3 locations open. I do not know how fast the transition will be, but I'd expect it very quickly, if not already done. They will go back to being fully stocked! Great news!
