Hi!
I have installed the EE Software and went through the setup successfully.
I have created one first Exhibition but I don't know how to setup the paths and everything. Do I have to create thumbnails or will the program do this? Maybe one can give a sample folder layout and tell me where to upload the pictures! My album is at http://www.100mb4free.de/julius/webalbum
Also I don't know how to edit the author of the pics, all I can choose from in misc. settings is "unknown" and "Pekka Saarinen"
Please help me! :)
Thank you.
Julius

sorry, I didn't mention that I'm running the old 1.2.2 Version!
Isn't the 1.5 still a beta? Should I upgrade to it anyways?
Thx for any support!

everything you need to access is in the editing menus in your input folder... the PATH EDITOR is where you set your paths... the MULTI EDITOR has many small editors in it... among them is the OWNER editor...

i think that's something you'll have to decide for yourself... i'm playing with both... 1.5 is much better than 1.2.2, handsdown... not only is it faster than 1.2.2 but it seems to be more robust as well as feature rich... pekka has done an excellent job on 1.5... now if i can just scrape the $$$ together to get to him for his excellent work :(
i have each assigned to their own database to keep the tables from being mixed up... i've done a bit more with 1.2.2 but not enough to really not want to leave it... i just wish it was easier to integrate them into my theme scheme on my site so the experiance is cleaner... don't know what's going to happen when i implement a way for visitors to choose the color scheme them prefer to view my site with and then how to cause EE to switch, too... basically, its easy enough to switch out CSS sheets but getting that integrated into EE is going to be one whale of a job since EE doesn't use blah.css files but instead codes the css within each page it generates...

I just saw I would need image magick on the server. It's free websapace and not available there, so no 1.5 version for me...
Can you please answer my questions?
A sample folder layout would be very helpful! And where do I have to upload? Maybe my English just isn't good enough
And what about the author name? How do I change it?
Thx for the help!

you do not need image magik... i don't use it on my stuff... besides, its not available for my server platform...
Can you please answer my questions?
what did i miss?

with 1.2.2, there's is a lot of manual work that 1.5 does for you... as for the folder layout, that is really entirely up to you... in my original installation i just created an "exhibits" folder and then in there, i created a folder for each exhibit...
something like this...
/my-exhibits
/my-exhibits/exhibit-1
/my-exhibits/exhibit-2
inside exhibit-1 and exhibit-2, i created the thumbs and microthumbs directories... so the tree looked something like this...
/my-exhibits
/my-exhibits/exhibit-1
/my-exhibits/exhibit-1/thumbs
/my-exhibits/exhibit-1/microthumbs
/my-exhibits/exhibit-2
/my-exhibits/exhibit-2/thumbs
/my-exhibits/exhibit-2/microthumbs
but, with EE allowing very freeform methods, i also have some stuff in folders other than my-exhibits...
And where do I have to upload? Maybe my English just isn't good enough
no, your english seems fine to me... better than some americans...
with 1.2.2, you have to upload into the exhibit directory you want the picture to appear in... you'll have to create the thumbs and microthumbs manually with your picture editing program and upload them into the associated directory... make sure that you use nothing by gif and jpg and ensure that you keep the filenames and extensions in lowercase letters...
if you set up exhibit-1 with 10 pictures in it, you'll have created and uploaded 30 files in total... the default ones in exhibit-1, the thumbs in exhibit-1/thumbs and the microthumbs in exhibit-1/microthumbs... then you'll add them to the exhibit info that is stored in the database by selecting them by their microthumb... remember, though... you can name these anything you want... you can even have just three directories for all the pictures in all the exhibits and just select the pics in each exhibit...
And what about the author name? How do I change it?
as written in my previous message, in the multieditor... look at everything in these editors and add new entries for whatever you need to be able to select... you can also edit/change existing entries... i even went and created some pictures of my cameras and other tools and put them up so that the gear notes would show accurate information about what I used to create the picture... one of my tools is a full color scanner and it is listed for those items that i have scanned... for example, maps and documents that some of my (ahem) exhibits display 8)

that depends...
i would say... on your patience.
i'm impatient and curious. and i'm very interested in a php-software with sql-database support for photologgers, because i'm running a photolog myself.
for me EE is the best php-code available at the moment.
that's why i'm downloading and installing all EE beta versions and fixes...
but since i have customized EE a lot to serve my needs, every update can mean a lot of new work for me, while having my website run smoothly...
so you have to decide. better wait for the final version or keep track of the development... :)

I'm interested to hear if you have a list of things which would be needed to make your site layout possible on vanilla EE, with use of templates and styles. By a quick look (nicely done!) it would be pretty close to current version capabilities anyways.

shame over me, i have to admit, i had problems to understand how to use the embedding system of EE...
when you ask me what's on my wishlist... well, it's not too much:
as you have seen on my site [thanks!] i just want to:
show the latest three images, maybe with the image header above or below,
some random images of a gallery of my choice,
the amount of images of a gallery,
and a text link to the latest photo (the latest in -> exhibition order, not in ID order)
maybe a "prev" and "next" link for browsing exhibitions (i'm planning to use many exhibitions with series of only few photos)...
all this to use on all EE pages, index included.
moreover i would like to customize the layout e.g. of the comments system and the microthumb behaviour more easily to make it fit the page layout. it was rather hard for me, being not at all experienced in php, to rake around in the code, always paying attention not to destroy it, just to customize a few borders or to remove unneeded dropdown fields.
i think working with code snippets would be much easier...

Ok now I found out how to change the author's name! :!:
Can somebody recommend a small and easy (freeware-) program to create thumbs and microthumbs with?
Is there a German language pack for the 1.2.2 version?
@ Pekka: since you appeared in this thread, I want to tell you I'm amazed by the work that you have put into this!! It's really cool!

I use EzThumbs - http://www.fookes.com/ezthumbs/ - which works very well for my purposes.

Please tell me how to setup all those paths!
I do not understand how to point to all the folders - what's up with the "size path" editor? How does it have to look?
Please tell me the according extensions, my gallery is situated at http://www.100mb4free.de/julius/webalbum
I created a folder "Geburtstag" for some birthday pictures, CHMODDED everything to 0777 and put thumbs into Geburtstag/thumb and the regular pics into Geburtstag/big.
It does neither show thumbs in the exhibition editor nor would I see any pictures when selecting the exhibition in public mode!
Please help me!!!
Best regards,
Julius
EDIT: I can now see thumbs and microthumbs in the exhibition editor screen, but no photo in the public area! Please help!!!

Well, the easiest method to learn it is by observing how the demo gallery is set - that works great there. You can use its paths (point them to your own server) and settings, just hide the original demo photos in photo editor and rename the gallery to your liking.

ok, that's a good idea!
But where do I upload the actual picture itself to?
In the path editor there are only "..." for the paths that I have configured, although I have set them as paths in the exhibition settings...
I have folders for big, small, and normal pics and put pictures into them - I can't see any of them!
Best regards,
Julius

The webalbum ought to be running next week :(
Please tell me how to setup the folders and where to upload the actual pitures!
If I look at the example pics/folders, it often only has a "index.htm" inside - which format has to be called "default" and what should be the names of the other variables?
Please please help me, I know too little yet

Hello
I have some problems with the management of folders. Initailly I had folders
gallery/photos/normal
gallery/photos/thumbs
gallery/photos/microthumbs
But had problems when I downloaded filed with the same names. (On my cameras the filenames are always repeated.)
I like your example having differnet folders for differenent exhibitions. However when I set this up all my thumbs still go to the original thumbs directory (gallery/photos/thumbs). The new folders as you list here in your example are not created.
/my-exhibits
/my-exhibits/exhibit-1
/my-exhibits/exhibit-1/thumbs
/my-exhibits/exhibit-1/microthumbs
/my-exhibits/exhibit-2
/my-exhibits/exhibit-2/thumbs
/my-exhibits/exhibit-2/microthumbs
How can I force thumbs to go to the new folders?
