Has anybody done this hack? How does it work? Good, bad? I found some info on it here:

http://www.earthboundlight.com/phototips/nef-windows-xp-sp2.html

including the download for changing the registry. (bottom of the page)

For those who are not familiar with it, the hack allows you to view DNG thumbnails in Windows Explorer (XP SP2 only I believe).

Well since nobody else has seemed to try it I did it myself. After a quick backup of the registry I ran the file and it works great. The thumbnails are fast to load as well. I will update this thread as I use it to see if there are any quirks.

I'd read the same page only a few days ago, but hadn't been willing to try it myself, either. I didn't imagine it could be much of a problem, but I don't have the time right now to fix it should anything have gone wrong.

I hope everything runs flawlessly for you -- I'll probably try it myself shortly.

I tried this today and it worked...I could read DNG's with Windows Explorer, however I could no longer view CRW or CR2 files. I didn't know how to revert, so I tried doing a system restore then reinstalling the RAW viewer. It installs but doesn't make the RAW files viewable.

Help!

Try using the Arcsoft RAW viewer instead. It is supposed to make windows explorer read any RAW file, including DNG. I installed it and it seems to work great.
