R.I.P Gus. We'll miss you. He passed last night at the ripe old age of 14. He survived brutal winter windstorms and less that stellar care when we lived in Turks & Caicos. When we came back and he retired from mousing he was pretty happy (as you can see).

He enjoyed a solid 7 cat years of retirement sitting by the fireplace and eating premium food along with daily coat brushing. He lived like a king. Pulmonary Edema and heart disease took him in his sleep yesterday.

The night before, it was snowing, sleeting, raining and it was ugly n' cold. He was really sick, taking meds, fed through a syringe - but I knew he was out of the ugly weather being cared for. It meant a lot to me.

He literally just walked into my house one summer day (back door wide open) and meowed. We were fast friends. Only later did I find out he had lost his master and had gone stray. Master was Dad in son's basement suite and had passed away. Son lived down the street, told me Gus' name and age and was very happy to see he found (chose?) us.

It's not often that a little animal literally walks in your door and it becomes what it did for me and my wife. When we left to go to the Caribbean, Son told us he'd look after him. We didn;t think he'd stand the heat and/or the trip. When we came back 6 months later he was all matted and underfed. We took him back and he was SO happy to be with us again.

I've had cats before, but this was different. SO GLAD I took pictures of him. I shot that cat all the time...

Jason, thats a good rescue story...

I have had cats since I was born.seriously.Except for one year, when my previous cat was killed, I have always had a cat. They are amazing companions.

We had a an tom cat adopt us almost 30 years ago now......Mac.and he was an outside cat.hated being inside..he slept in the garage on top of a shelf.:confused: He stayed with us for 6 years.then one day he was gone.

A few months later...I heard a meow at the front door.looked out and there was Mac, and another adult cat.and 5 kittens! We lived across from the racetrack in Cloverdale at the time. I brought a load of food and water to the door.and those kittens and mom lapped everything up.then they all left.
It was probably one of the most touching moments I can remember with a cat.

all my current cats are either rescue cats or kittens of
i remember one moment the first time i fed one stray mum - she was too timid to let me touch her but she allowed me to watch her eat, then she backed off and went to return to her kittens (at the time we didnt know she had any)
then just as she was leaving, she turned at the corner of the house and looked me full in the face, up and down, for about 10 seconds - i could see her eyes moving - and then she went. it was very odd at the time, but then i realised she was memorising what i looked like for future visits - she came for food every day after that and was soon tame enough to handle but she only let me pat her, the rest of my family wasnt allowed. we ended up catching all her kittens and raising them indoors, and she would come and go.

it is such a privilege to take an animal who has never been well treated and turn their experience around. glad to see there's people everywhere doing this! keep the photos coming

my cats arent... they either straight run over: "MUMMY!" whenever i get on the ground with them, or they glare suspiciously at the camera with one ear back and then bolt, completely suspending all cute-looking activities which made me get the camera in the first place

you know what? the domestic housecat is directly descended from the African Wildcat - they actually look identical to ordinary tabby cats, is quite surreal to see them running about in the long grass near the zebras and lions

Here is a photo of our two cats Christmas Day. They are my wife's babies... espcially since our daughter thinks she is soooo grown up... and almost a teen. Photos were taken with 300D, 18-55mm ef-s, & Sigma EF-500DG Super, bounced straight up. Did I mention I have a 30D on a UPS truck now... that I got for Christmas! Love Ya Honey!
