Well, I DID IT. Got the 100-400L IS, after so much reading, asking questions and going with other lenses. I broke down and bought the lens, with a little help from Uncle Sam. All I can say is WOW. Just the few sample pics that I have taken, are GREAT. I had to return the sigma 70-200 f/2.8 because it did not want to work with anything but Center Focus point. I know it was not my 300D since my other 2 lenses work fine. I do have to say this for this Sigma lens, it HAS GREAT QUALITY also, but since I have had issues with 2 different sigmas, I will stay with canon. Since Uncle Sam was nice to me, I applied the return credit and payed the difference and got me the 100-400L IS. And I have all of YOU to blame :D :P
Thanks to all of you. As soon as I get some worth wild pictures, I will post and ask for your opinions. NO DUCK PICTURES for sure

What's the point of having a 100-400 if you're not going to take pictures of ducks? What a waste.
:)
Congrats on the lens - you'll love it.

No DUCKS? Probably no geese, either. Hmmm...
Did that lens come with a round trip ticket to Montreal? At least you'd get some use out of it...

Well good grief! They do make stuffed ducks ya know. Sheesh. If you ain't got no ducks then you may as well send that lens back. ;)
As you well know, you're preaching to the choir when mentioning how great that lens is.
Congrats!!!

Do Seagulls count as ducks. The ducks kept moving to fast as they flew by fo me to get them in the lens, much less in focus. They must have been clocking 75 KPH :)
Meanwhile the seagulls kept zooming directly overhead, except when I turned to talk to somebody about the camera and then they would float right in front of the lens until I had turned back around. I could see them in my perifery vision. Have you ever tried to go straight back with the 100-400 on a tripod, my poor neck.
I did have fun sneaking up on the grounded seagulls though with my 70-200/2.8L IS. I used the angle finder C and I suspect this confused them enough to get closer then normal.

I believe that if you check page 317, paragraph 14 in Otto Von Quackin's Ducks of the Desert you will see a picture of the rare Desert Mallard (fowlimus alwaysthirstymus) easily identified by the little canteen it carries around its neck. It's call is a rather haunting "Quack..cough..quack..cough"
I believe I have a photo somewhere..................

You must have an old copy of Dr. Von Quackin's book. The latest edition clearly shows a bottle of Perrier.
He's also updated the entry on the Rufflehead (showing the Sour Cream and Onion striping of the juvenile) and the entry on the Great Horny Owl clearly... well, don't show the kids.

I saw a Desert Mallard with a cask of Brandy. Must have swapped with a St. Bernard during a stopover at the Great Northern Migration Trail Inn And Resort.
Have Fun

You are all welcome. Now I only need 2 other pictures and I think I am 100% vested in the L club.
I need a picture of a race car
I need a picture of 1 live person
Am I correct in this, or do I need other pics to be 100% vested.
 :P  :D :o
Yes Daaaveman, it is a ruberus duckus. It lives in morenoar tubus. This duck is like my American Express Card "Never leave home with out it"
Have a question in regards to IS. Does the battery camera battery drain faster when using IS? I only ask because one of my batteries drained very fast, about 100 pics or so

Yes, though Canon says it doesn't matter as much as you saw.
However, it depends on what you're doing. If you're tracking a lot with finger depressed halfway, then you are in constant-focus/constant-IS mode. That will drain batteries. If you just looked around a lot and quickly hit the shutter, you'd only be using IS for something like 1/4 second per shot. So the batteries will last much longer than if you hold that shutter down for 20 seconds at a time, waiting for the right shot.

Yep,. a race car in action,. or some other form of colorfull motorsport,.. the "person" needs to be a concerend looking olive skinned woman,. no exceptions.. (usually sticking a 400mm lens in her face will give the appropriate expression :) so that should not be too difficult )
Ducks,. well they may be de rigeur for now,. but in a few more weeks they will be quite passe~
No,. in a Months time it will be Herons!

Batteries;
Sometimes new batteries need to be "broken in" .. 100 shots is WAY too few to be normal,. or to be an IS battery issue. My bet is that whne yuo drain that battery and let it re-cahrge for 8 hours or so.. it will give you 300 or more shots.. if not,. then you have a defecteive pack,. so watch that battery and see how things progess.
