Cool shot, looks a little out of focus to me though. Can I ask why you shot at f2?

Well he was at 1/125...stop down, and they'd be blurred! f/2, to get the highest shutter speed possible!
I don't think it's out of focus...looks like a quality loss from uploading. Although it can't be easy to get that much in focus at f/2.

F/2 but 10th row so there is enough distance to the subjects to make it work most of the time. I also use my 85mm f/1.2 in for ballet when it's really dark and even there dof is less of an issue than you might guess.

I told Lorna that I thought her boyfriend was an ass!!! But she just said I was jealous :( :D
p.s. great shot. yes, somewhat soft but still extremely effective. in fact, the softness in focus and colors to me helps lend a "dreamlike"/"otherworld" surrealness to it. great for the subject matter.

OK, Rutt, I bought the 5D and 135mm f/2.0 (with rebate!) so when will my images look as good as yours? :-)

All done well, but the image does not look 'crisp'. At least a lot less crisp then your usual posts.

This is fair. As befits its name and theme A Midsummer Nigtht's Dream was really really really dark. About like 2 hours of the Arabian Dance from The Nutcracker. Even the second act which has the wedding march and isn't supposed to be as dark was dark. One problem when it's that dark is metering properly. It's all too easy to overexpose the dancers in light costumes and in the spots. Should have trusted my spot meter better. I'd lke to use manual exposure, but the light changes quickly and upredictably. In the past, I've sometimes been able to attend more than one rehearsal, but my new day job is getting on my funk.
In short, you are right. These aren't as good technically as I've gotten before.
On the other hand, I reprocessed this particular shot from scratch and came got this. Looks a little crisper to my eye:

Thanks a lot Dwight.
Take Dan Margulis' course and then you'll be more than a match for me.

The reprocessed image is interesting, too, but still not crisp, sigh. Well, if you ALWAYS got such great images you'd have nothing to strive for.
I am going to be taking some seminars at the Lepp Institute up the coast from me. Once I learn what I am supposed to be doing I will revisit the finer points of ballet shooting ... my level of ignorance is so enormous that it would fill the opera house and that will take a long time to begin to fill, sigh.
I am getting some marvelous shots with the 5D and 15mm fisheye ... and they are really sharp with excellent colors.
