It seems I am always way behind any more! I have a boxing card and Tower of Power in the pipeline and so much work lined up that I can't imagine that I will ever catch up. So, again, I apologize for not having images resized for POTN and you will have to go to my website to see the Al Jarreau images (http://www.dwightmccann.com/ChumashCasinoResort/AlJarreau01262007/AlJarreau01262007.html):

All images are "out of camera" with resize/sharpen only so I know one or two are tilted a bit, sigh.

Nice images. I was going to ask what lens you used then decided to look at your gear list. Heck, it doesn't even make sense to ask - you've got it all. Are you being treated for your L-coholism?

Honeybee, I think the EXIF is intact on all the images ... if you don't yet have the Opanda EXIF plugin for your browser I urge you to get it ... it's free. If you don't know what I'm talking about then yell ... 'cause you need it! And yes, I have quite a bit of equipment in an ever growing list ... all carefully budgeted to be paid for before bought, thanks to good friends and clients. Anytime you are out my way you are welcome to borrow whatever I've got ... I buy only what I think will make my images better by allowing me more flexibility. This year I am concentrating on seminars rather than equipment although I will budget in anything I learn that I need. I'm very weak on Photoshop (I don't use it although I've got it) and RAW processing and totally ignorant on color management and that must change.
bmo, Yup, I love that 300mm f/2.8! My favorite lens for entertainment ... I can't handhold the 400mm f/2.8. I love the head shots!
Lord, I used to live in Bethesda, raised around Washington, D.C., spent my military time at the Pentagon ... didn't used to be much between Baltimore and the beltway, although I was there before the beltway and before Dulles! Al is a master craftsman but almost too goody-goody ... kinda takes the edge off a guy who could slice through diamond in one breath.

Excellent subject captures and framing, fabulous colors and composition...
I see an Alto Sax but no Clarinet...No one ever shows up with a Clarinet, anymore...Sigh.

I have seen only one or two on the set out of some 44+ shows this past season...Bobby Vinton played one, (he also plays the Oboe)...
I recall the Benny Goodman Orchestra with Benny playing all the time...While the Jack Benny and the Steve Parr Shows, keep reminding me of the clarinet too...
I hear it's one of the more difficult instruments to play...
Usually when a band has so many sax to choose from, there is a clarinet hidden in the mix.

Yes, my lighting is just about as good as it gets ... well usually, unless the talent's own people want to do their lighting and then it often falls apart, sigh. And, of course, you know I am only jealous of your expertise and am working to convert to RAW religionism as well as Photoshop.

Dwight, viewing from work; can't add a thing here - will check out Opanda plug-in for home. Normally, I don't check other people's EXIF but was impressed w/your images.
I like how to built your collection and how you switch foci so you don't get bogged down. Wish I was near so you could loan me lenses and I could teach you Photoshop!

I think in my Q&A (and likely elsewhere) I talk about my default routine: start near one side of the stage, move to middle, back up to lightboard, move to other side front, and then whatever I have time for. I use two or three bodies, carrying two with me as I walk around, leaving one on the floor as I shoot with the other, sometimes handing one I am not using to a guest to hold. Having to do a collage for each event really helps me think about getting left face, right face, close and far images as raw material for the photoart.

most of the head shots are nice and crisp. the full stage shots seem to have a lot of wasted space. the first fishy instruments shot is very cool, but the second is redundant. not sure why you would devoted so much real estate

Thanks Dave, it is nice when I can wander the stage before a performance.

Thank you, I guess. For the full stage shots, they are "out of camera" (uncropped) and not only have a bit more space than necessary but may even be a bit tilted. But this situation does reflect the performance and I like the balance between the close ups and the wide angles. If I were selling them I might post process them.
Sometimes, when we observe a phenonmenon that we don't understand, i.e. "not sure why you would devoted so much real estate", it is best to assume there is a good reason and search it out. The image of the saxophones was intended to give a feel for the stage and the saxes themselves were interesting to me. The image of the keyboard is significant as it includes both some of the lighting truss construction out over the audience as well as some of the seating area including the raised section and therewith gives some sense of the venue. As for the amount of real estate, it is actually pretty unlimited ... I have huge storage and bandwidth parameters on my website as I periodically have to withstand significant peak demand such as when James Brown died and when the Steely Dan fan websites and newsletters saw my images.

i guess i am searching it out. and i'm smelling what you're steppin in. point noted on the venue shot, it made the shot to have the house lights on. but could you not have gotten the sax shot while there were performers on stage? as for the real estate comment, i was not referring to storage on your webserver; i was talking about the collage. 16% of the collage for al, went to venue shots.

I do not think that anyone would have been pleased if I had walked onto the stage in the middle of Al's performance to get three feet away from the saxophones to take this picture and rather than the soft blue lights there would have been a lot of harsh colored lighting.
The collages, hmmm, yes, well you see, another opportunity to have simply asked a question rather than cast a remark, "Is there some reason that Al doesn't fill the frame in the collage?" Had you asked I would have explained that the collages, rather than merely my unrestrained artistic expression, are a requirement of my agreement with the casino and as such must capture the overall look & feel of the stage and production. When I go too far featuring the talent I get flack for minimizing the beauty of the production work and when I don't show some emphasis on the headliner I am pinged for that ... nobody is ever happy, eh? It is nice that my clients don't spend time making (or pretending to make) precise measurements of the percentage of space I use for these features or the number of words devoted to their specific commentaries. I have, after all, several excellent captures of Al so that is well covered.

Hehehe is right! :-) Had I mentioned while you were around that the best man at my first wedding is now a lady (and my boss' boss)? This is, after all, California, the land of diversity. However, in this particular case it is fun to watch the fish rising to the bait rather than just the friendly exchange of helpful advice and criticism. I spent a lovely 90 minutes with my wife last night shooting Dolly Parton, an excellent show (they give my wife an All Access pass any time she wants to be my assistant at the casino) ... 850 frames in the first three songs and no closer than the lightboard and then stood against the wall holding her hand (we're practically newlyweds ... eleven years and a five year old daughter) for the rest of the performance ... so I guess I am particularly effluential today!:lol::lol:

Hey, it takes one to know one, buddy! ;)
Yes, the Chumash Casino Resort management is amazing. Unlike the Pentagon and the University where I have worked that use micromanagement, heavy social classes, threats, fear and intimidation to control employees, the casino uses respect, care and concern. This attitude clearly comes down through management from the tribe and its management/council and is stunning in its power and the cohesion it evinces. Not only do they give Marna an All Access pass (which really doesn't mean much) but they will give us meal vouchers so she doesn't have to deal with a meal on nights she attends and everyone watches out for her during that portion of the events that I am off shooting. In return I do everything I can think of to promote and serve their interests. Being involved in relationships in which everyone strives to benefit and respect each other is personally empowering.

don't stress Michael. Dwight's a really really good guy. I know and I am sure Dwight will realize you just talk straightforward like that and no meanness or illwill was intended.

I have hundreds of posts in response to criticism, some of it quite harsh, that would suggest that I am very open to criticism and suggestions and have implemented dozens of changes in my workflow and style as a result. While I know from personal experience that making snide and sharp comments to make a point, particularly toward someone that I am not fond of, can be defended by claiming, "I was only trying to give helpful criticism", I would suggest that such claims are very transparent. It is the tone and style of your posts, as I have tried to point out, that make them stinging. Comments like, "I can't figure out why you do ...." rather than, "Why do you do ...". Saying you can't figure it out is NOT the same as asking. Rather it implies that since you can't figure it out then it must be inadequate or deficient somehow and claiming that meaning is not there is, again, transparently disingenuous. I almost get the feeling that you are depressed (as in bipolar) and that your anger leaks out in the style of your comments. It has been this way since you first PM'd me asking for advise and then berating me because I spent only "33% of my comments answering your particular query and 52% giving gratuitous advice" etc., etc. In the normal course of friendly discussion people don't use percentages of subject content to "correct" others. I expect you have some rationalization for why you use this technique but it really doesn't change the deriding style of it.
If you choose to interact/comment on my work in a way that presupposes we are working toward a common goal and a common good then you won't get flippant or demeaning responses from me. If instead you choose to justify your ascerbic posts and make personally attacking comments then I will continue to hold this up to the light for comment. And I do recognize that I have "been on my soapbox" about this and have ranted on and on, but it has been in the hope that you will understand that I would prefer comraderie to hostility. I will speak of it no more.

You have no idea! My gig at the casino was gotten for me by Rick Barker of Big Machine Records and manager of Taylor Swift who is now a neighbor and friend. Our first interactions would have gotten us jailed if we had been face to face rather than over email as we would both have murdered the other. How can you get to know someone if you don't face conflict together (or apart, depending!)
Oh, I am always open to explaining why I do what I do. I am open to suggestions for alternatives. I am open to criticism. Rene, Chris, Kalle, Steve Parr, Richard, James. DZ Studios and many others have all found fault with my work in no uncertain terms and I have made adjustments and look at many aspects differently than I did previously. I have been so bludgeoned by the RAW evangelists that I have one permanently on my ignore list (which Michael wasn't on) and next week I will be taking a Digital Workflow seminar at Lepp Institute in an effort to learn a little Photoshop and perhaps RAW, neither of which I use now and would never use if it was not for criticism, suggestions and other harshness.
I get accused of arrogance enough that I will simply have to accept that I am arrogant. Lord knows I've worked hard enough to deserve it. And I'm not a Christian so I don't really mind much. People do throw it out as though it would bring fire and pestilence on me but life seems to just get better and better.

I did just get agreement from everyone on my hallway that I am arrogant and wonderful ... the perfect match. Actually I think Lovey is still just excited from my suggestion about what to give her boyfriend. I do wish she'd post some pictures or go back to posing for them.

an olive branch to dwight is like a tiger pouncing on a little rabbit.
God, I love it when you talk romantic.
well, if i posted my boobs, your post count would go up like it always does when you see skin.
and you'll get your chance to use some flowery arrogant language with subtle putdowns when i post some pics.

To thine own self be true. your pictures?]
I understand. Hey, Dolly was magnificent but they wouldn't let me closer than the lightboard, sigh. Pictures are in the pipeline but I have to finish Tower of Power first, probably this weekend. Did you post Dolly?
Our venue hadn't hosted Dolly's show yet...Kenny R., yes, Dolly, possibly, soon....I wonder if we're (1800 seats) big enough?
Tomorrow nite, I'm going to the Jefferson Starship and Quicksilver shows...It will be a three hour marathon...for the first time, the venue offered an $80 seat...and they get to sit up front...I have no idea where I'll end up or if they'll even let cameras in this time...;)
Tower of Power is pretty cool... looking forward to seeing their act in pictures...

Phew, be still my heart ... you are a real sweet talker, honey, and I am thrilled to know you have been monitoring me enough to know what makes my post count go up ... phew, I'm gonna hafta' turn on the pace maker again ... oh, that's better. And I now have a suspicion about about who that boyfriend is, eh?

Dwight... your posters... what size are they in their printed form. I just shot a concert last friday and would like to do up a poster for the promoter, but am unsure what size to pursue. The one I am creating is 24x30. Cheers.

Say Dwight,
Here is a round about connection...
TOP has a great following... I just shot a series of pics of the "Big Shot" The Ultimate Billy Joel Experience Band... From this band, John Scarpulla (http://johnscarpulla.com/) also recently played the sax with the Tower Of Power for two years...
Here is a quote from John's Bio " With Tower John played and recorded on "Rhythm and Business" and can be heard on the Rhino compilation entitled "What is Hip? : The Tower of Power Anthology" and Soul with a Capitol "S":The Best of Tower of Power". With TOP John toured most of the United States and North America as well as most of Europe numerous times."
He went on to star on the sax, in the present NYC Broadway Show "Movin' Out"...
Anyway, when they return to my local venue, John has invited me to do a special shoot of their show with my new "L" lenses...

I build them on a 6000 x 4000 pixel background with a maximum target print size of 24" x 36", and then print them on 11" x 17" for normal product delivery and 13" x 19" for matting/framing/displaying for myself and potential sales.

You are fortunate ... I have tried twice to set something up with TOP (I've shot them three times) and it just doesn't seem to solidify ... as I always say, it's who you know! :-)

Ah, the advantage of a greater sensor on a top of the line quality camera... I like the idea of downsizing the image for IQ.
I'll PM you re: TOP in just a few...
