View Full Version : New Sigma Lens With A Red Stripe

DPReview has a home-page story today introducing a new Sigma zoom lens that is specifically designed for digital cameras. It is an 18-125 zoom, and it has a red stripe around the end of the barrel. Hmmm :?

Are they thumbing their nose up at Canon? Has Canon ever protected the stripe with a Service Mark or other Copyright? Hmmm :?

That will be a comfort two years from now, when it has been turned into a loupe for locating dust spots after finding out it won't work with Canon's latest iteration of DSLRs. :P :) :D

I don't believe in lens specificaly designed for DSLRs, they will exist exactly until there will be no more non-full frame sensors. Apparently, some people actually are buying sigma lens, and from what I hear, not just complete retards, so I guess they do work, and if, due to Canon's funny firmware fiddling, cease to work properly, Sigma brings them up to date at no charge.

I like it shaken, not stirred.

O yeah, I guess the partial retards buy them as well. So while they are waiting to have their lens rechipped, rewired, (whatever), those with Canon lenses will be getting the shot. :P

I'll wait for some real-world reviews before deciding, but these special digital lenses are just kinda silly. That's like releasing special CF cards designed especially for digital cameras.

I do like the focal length however. 18-125. Nice coverage.

Sooo...who exactly in the subject mix qualifies as a "retard"? And, to further define, what qualifies a "retard" as a "complete retard" or as a "partial retard"? Normally, the word "retard" is used as a derogatory and very insensitive term to describe one with a moderate to severe mental development disability or severe learning disability, as well as those with a condition called "Down's Syndrome". It is always an insulting term, so I suppose the distinction here would be which group is the target? Is the insult intended for those who are actually mentally challenged by comparing them with people "stupid" enough to buy a Sigma lens, or is it intended for those who are "stupid" enough to buy a Sigma lens by making a comparison between them and the mentally challenged people for whom the word was coined in the first place? Oh...wait a second...now that I think about it, either way would be equally insulting to either group, wouldn't it? Clever. Does it mean that people who don't have the funds to buy Canon "L" glass but want something better than the consumer Canon glass are automatically "stupid" for buying Sigma instead? It also makes me wonder....if a person that threw around the term "retard" had a loved one that was affected by one of these conditions, would they still use the term in such a cavalier manner? You also have to wonder....how, exactly, does the act of purchasing a Sigma lens define a person's mental capabilities on the whole? Is it the same for people who buy a Toyota instead of a Mercedes? Does the amount of money a person have to spend qualify them as a "retard" or "normal person"?

Just wondering....

Well, if, like the EF-S lenses, they are only designed to cover the APS-sized sensor, they make good sense for the market that will never see a 1D or 1Ds. I'm sure they cost less to design and manufacture than a lens for the 24x36 frame. I don't know what is 'special' about this lens, it was only introduced today. Time will tell.

But don't snicker about special CF cards - Sandisk announced 'shoot & store' CF cards at PMA designed for keeping your photos. It sounded to me like they just found a way to sell small capacity CF cards again

From what I heard, digital lens basically have 2 distinct features.

1) the way light approaches the image media from the last element of the lens (I got this piece of info from a photographer)
What this means is traditionally, lens falls onto the film at an angle. But for the digital sensor nowadays, this kind of construction would cause light fall off on the sides. Therefore, digital lens as designed so that light always falls on the sensor at 90 degrees no matter at the center or corner.

2) anti-reflective coating on the last lens element
Because we are using sensor, not film. They are claim that there are chances we would get a reflective glare of the digital components on our image. Therefore, digital lens are suppose to have a anti-reflective coating on the last lens element to prevent this.

Those two features are both advertized on "digital only" lenses, but they are far from unique to them. None of my "regular" lenses (including my Sigma EX) exhibit any significant light falloff on the edges. As well, all of them appear to have coated rear elements.

I could be a little off base here, but the only universal thing I've seen on "digital only" lenses so far is that they are designed for the "aps-sized" sensor and thus are made smaller and at considerably reduced manufacturing cost.

Bad news, Jim. After looking at the press release, I noticed that the 18-125 has an image circle designed specifically for the APS-sized sensor. So unless you were looking for a special-effect vignetting lens, you won't be able to use it on the 1DMKII.

There was an article in Popular Photography and Imaging a month or two ago about this. The reviewer gave these two reasons for "digital lens" FWIW, he came to the conclusion that they were worth it if you were buying a new lens, but not worth replacing all your current lens'.

People do make choices for their own reasons and some god makes for you. Because someone is different or chooses different does not make them any less wise, happier or smarter. No, actually, I don't think I did. I went back and read it several times and the word "retard" was in it each time I read it, and no where in the post did I see it mentioned that you were buying Sigma glass.

I think you may have misread mine, though. I never said that I was personally offended by what you said. I was only asking questions. The point that I was trying to make was that there would surely be someone reading it that would be offended. Needlessly so. The use of words like that is no different from using the "N" word in reference to black people or any other disparaging word in reference to any other group of people. I'm quite sure that you had absolutely no intention of offending anyone and that thought didn't even enter your mind when you typed that word, but there are people who are sensitive to those things. Unfortunately the word you used has become common in speech in the US, and people that use it don't even give a second thought to it. However, other people within earshot (or eyeshot) may very well be offended if they, or someone they love has a mental disadvantage.

I have someone close to me that is mentally disadvantaged, but it really doesn't offend me when someone says something like that. I just understand that it was said without thinking. It would break her heart if she heard it though, just as I'm sure the mentally challenged person in your family would be hurt.

I think Wickedfn4u is a good case in point. That's probably who you should be explaining the meaning of your post to, not me.

I think that we should be having fun in here, as we normally do, and be free (within reason) to post what we want and express our opinions, relate our experiences and ask our questions regarding all things photographic, but let's try not to make our points at other people's expense. As I said before, I don't think you had any intentions of offending anyone. I was only pointing out that a definite potential for it existed.

First let me say that I NEVER post here with the intent of disparaging people that are physically or emotionally challenged. I apologize sincerely if you saw that I did.

Next point - I did not introduce the remark, I only illuminated someone else's use of it. Did it change the meaning? Perhaps, but please lighten up.

Next point - You made the connection between the term and your situation. Again, please lighten up.

Next point - Perhaps (my opinion only) you should frequent RobotGalbraith, where the rules are so tight that fun is impossible.

First Rick don't tell me to lighten up until you walk a day in my shoes. You have not stood in line while mother of another child pulls that kid away and use the term retarded like G3 said in a disparaging way or like it is a disese she could catch.

And yes you did further the insensitivity by your statement "O yeah, I guess the partial retards buy them as well." I love fun, and am very light hearted, but I will never have fun at someone else’s expense or stand for that, my daughter, skin color or belief included.

Please accept my apology for the cavalier usage of a sensitive term for comedic value. 'Complete' versus 'partial' was the key there, and if another slang term was associated with it, that term would have been used.

While we're at it, I looked up the definition of the first part of your handle. Wicked:
Evil by nature and in practice: “this wicked man Hitler, the repository and embodiment of many forms of soul-destroying hatred” (Winston S. Churchill).
Playfully malicious or mischievous: a wicked prank; a critic's wicked wit.
Severe and distressing: a wicked cough; a wicked gash; wicked driving conditions.
Highly offensive; obnoxious: a wicked stench.
Slang. Strikingly good, effective, or skillful: a wicked curve ball; a wicked imitation.

You may want to consider the message you send out to all that log on here. If you want to be Wicked, you should be able to take a hit or two in stride.
