*$&#'ing dog licked my lens (70-200 f/4), had my eye buried into the viewfinder as he came up on my blind side.

I guess some ordinences apply to everyone else

You were using a hood, right?

Definitely, the dog or the woman would have been swimming had I not.

And now you know why I consider dogs a protective filter situation. Their lick is worse than their bite. And much more frequent.

A few minutes after the lens "cleaning" a couple showed up with their little girl... the dog owner promptly attached the leash at that point. After a brief "go to haties" look, she and the dog went on down the street.

Sounds like your spidey senses were asleep on the job. J Good thing one doggie lick wont really going to do any damage, but ya know, this is a great situation where two eyes open would have been of benefit. One, the viewfinder eye, doing all of the real work, but the other, the lazy eye, just active enough to notice any movement peripherally.

Always shoot w/ both eyes open, habit from shooting skeet. My shoulder was making the blind side. Like you said, the dog lick won't hurt the lens though. Just the principle of the matter burns my hide.

Yea, dog owners should never let their animal approach anyone uninvited especially someone who is busy and may not see the animal approach. That’s just rude.

Yeah, what if you were afraid of dogs or something and went berzerk!!! lol

Dog should have been on a leash, whether there was a kid around or NOT!

Just make sure you take it out on the owner and not the dog. The dog is just doing what he's programmed to do. :)

How do you shoot with both eyes open? I tried it one day and could not see through the viewfinder. Does it just take practice? I would like to be able to keep both eyes open because I tend to get a headache from the effort of keeping one eye closed.

Well, the how is easy, don't close the other eye. J Getting use to is it a bit harder. You do want to keep your dominant eye in the viewfinder and there are some tests one can run to find out which is your dominant. But it’s just a matter of getting use to it. It’s really not that hard once you overcome the urge to not concentrate on both. For those of us without dominant eyes and who wear glasses there are a few other tricks like scotch tape over your non shooting eye and such.

I thought everyone used their right eye for the viewfinder! Gee, I learn so much around here.

If the woman had licked your lens, would we even be having this discussion right now?
