Based on lots of you guys saying nice things about this lens, I think I'm going to buy it.

I'm very new to photography, and I've seen filters and polorizers and lens hoods mentioned.

Which of these items to I need to order with the lens, are they necessary, and what do they do? I'm assuming they protect the lens? The hood keeps unwanted light out?

Thanks,
Greg

Filters and Polarisers depend on your needs and you may buy them later. But I strongly recommend to get the hood. It avoids lens flare which is quite heavy on this lens. And you know, the hood protects the lens.

I think you need.. at least :

- a UV filter (72mm) : You need to protect your investment.

After that I would go for :

- The lens hood : Will help you avoid lens flare.

Finally :

- a Circular Polarisers : Will help you reduce reflection on non metalic surfaces, and getting bluer sky.

I hope it help

If this lens will only be used on a DSLR, I would get the EW-78C hood instead of the one that is specified. It is slightly longer so it will work better than the spec'd hood considering the crop factor. I have both, and the EW-78C is the better choice.

Rick, you say "a DSLR" but I assume you mean "a DSLR with a 1.6 crop factor." What about a camera with a 1.3 factor? Do you think the longer hood would lead to vignetting? Gotta plan for the future, y'know ...

The concern is valid. I don't have a 1D to check it on. In fact the EW-78C is only slightly longer than the one that is specified, so I don't think it would vignette on the 1D, and if it did it could be trimmed with a Dremel tool (it is made of plastic).

In light of today's announcement (Kodak full-frame DSLR for $4000), you may want to reconsider - but the longer hood is still the one for the 1.6 folks.

Now, if someone wants to send me a 1D or 1DMKII so I can perform extensive testing on this, I will be happy to return it within 6 months...
