View Full Version : Dropped another lens!!

It's true. Actually, I didn't drop it. My BIL did when he was helping me empty the trunk of the car. He grabbed my Mini-Trekker, and it was partially unzipped. A lens fell out, bounced a couple times on the garage floor, and rolled under the car.
Now I guess you know I carry some pretty expensive glass in that bag including my 50mm f/1.2L. My 24-105L is in there as is my 16-35L.
We finally fished the lens out from under the car, and it turned out to be my Thrifty Fifty. I guess that's why it bounced so many times. Anyway, I just took some test snaps with it, and it seems to be just fine.
I am now going to go change my undergarments.

Of course the nifty wouldn't suffer, but if it were anything else it would have been lights out.

That has to make a sickening sound.

I hate these stories.... they make me nervous.. I'm glad it was just nifty and i'm glad that it's okay... Now, keep the bag zipped and your BIL away from it...;)

Yikes! My stomach just sank when I imagined a lens bouncing under the car... Glad it all turned out alright!

Thank goodness it was only nifty. I sort of had the same thing happen to me over the weekend, but much less drastic of a fall. Went to pick my Slingshot up off the floor and as I lifted it my 100-400 rolled out on to the carpet, didn't really drop, but scared the you know what out of me. I guess the moral to all of this is to make darn sure everything is always tightly zipped.

It didn't seem to do much damage and still autofocused, but when I tried to manually focus it. It was locked up tight---about $400 worth!

My 1DMKIIN and the attached 24-105 f4L fell out of my truck onto soft gravel about 3 days after I bought the lens. For about 3 minutes I was in Panic Mode Alpha, but I've got to tell you, those L lenses and 1D bodies are tough. The camera spazzed for a few seconds (wanted to give me a card error), but I turned it off, reseated the cards, and it worked just fine. I shot a two day festival after that with no issues and came away with some really sharp photos.
It is a truly sickening feeling to watch several thousand dollars worth of gear fall to the ground.

You really are a sucker for punishement aren't you. You could have left it attached to a body and tripod and then it wouldn't have fallen. Oh never mind, the tripod would still be sitting by the train tracks.:D:D:D

I kid, I kid...

Ah yes - last saturday my 20D & 16-35 did in fact leave my hand and impact the ground. Good thing it was only a couple of inches away from terra firma, bad thing was that my body had fallen from a couple of feet at the time so less skin on the knee & elbow than there used to be but at least the camera/lens isn't damaged.
Given there were at least 6 other POTN'ers there at the time and none of them witnessed this, and thus didn't record the event, I think myself thankful.

BelMondo, I resent your lens dropping stories...If they cause me to go back into intense 6 month therapy it'll be your fault! And furthermore, this is a family site, so enough with your horror tales!

I won't even comment on dropping that lens. I don't even consider it a lens; it's a toy.
As to your Vista plight, that was incredibly funny. As my dad would say, as funny as a clown at his own funeral.
I bought my wife an HP 17" notebook at B&H this past Sunday loaded with Vista. I hope the fact that a 400 pound dude dropped dead at the counter and was rushed out by ambulance personnel furiously performing CPR to no avail, after which one of the bosses said to some stunned employees: All right, back to work," doesn't place bad karma on the notebook which I'll give her for Valentine's Day.

I was away for the weekend when I dropped my step-dad's 70-200. I almost shot myself. I was already thinking about what I'd tell him if it wouldn't work properly. I'd be dead, he'd take all of my gear to compensate for the lens.
I never told him this because it was still fit as a fiddle.
