Hi all. This is my first meet of the year. I some ways if came back just as if I hand't had a break. I only shot the bars and the beam this time through. In other ways, I found it really hard to find the appropriate shots for this sports. There are shots that look spectacular, but I would feel uncomfortable having shots of my daughter in that position.... dad vs. photographer thing going on there. Anyway, here are a few from this weeks meet. It was a good meet in that I made relationships with a few new coaches that are interested in my services.... it's all good.

Comments and critique are more then welcome.... please.

OK, I will have to PP mine to see how they compare. Your's always look better, but we'll see after I PP. Of course you are linking instead of uploading to POTN and that makes a big difference. Now I am a little confused about the exif info on these. There are 2 different names? There is also a zoom lens with a FL > 200mm at f/2.8? I also see you had 2 cameras. The 20D which I have and a 1D. NV! I'm thinking of going 1Ds MarkIII when it comes out even if it requires all new lenses to do 22MP. You had an in with the coaches to go on the floor during competition or did you do the chalk shot far away? I had a chance to get in good with NCSU, I took some back in 2005, the coach was looking for someone, but I didn't come back until now.

I guess what I'm saying is...great job, especially if you're the one I need to strive to beat on gymanstics shots. That's the best compliment I can give.

I need to host my pictures so it is easier to leave the exif info in without sacraficing quality. Now you know why I didn't leave it in my shots. Oh yes, you could have put the link to here in the other post even if it would have made mine look bad. I still need to PP and they were just batched from RAW to go to web.

I can tell by your shots that you have issues with many of the girls positions..and thats fine...I can even understand since I have a 13 year old...but its not like you are "looking" for those kinds of shots, much less looking to embarrass someone. So if the athletes dont have a problem with thier positions I dont think you should either...

easy for me to say how you SHOULD feel huh.....LOL

Well I think you did quite well. This is a challenge in lighting, focus and PP work. I love the detail you pulled and the open space for the OOF backgrounds is a nice thing....

My daughter is 13 and her team runs from 6 - 18.... Sometimes the camera grabs things that in the normal course of an event goes by quickly or un-noticed...I don't post those either. Delete and move on. :)

Well done.

Thanks super.... I am just trying to play it super clean. Very very clean until I ave proven myself and my intentions. I'll let the coaches decide what shots they feel comfortable with putting out there. I have them, just won't post them. A buddy of mine coaches ladies soccer at the university level and all it took is one player to make a claim that nearly ruined a near perfect career. Fortunately he kept his reputation clean, and he was given the benifit of doubt. I don't have that track record yet.

Jeff... it was tough. I took way more shots then I normally do to get my quota of keepers. And these took a lot more tlc then I normally have to do in PP to get them even close to usable. Still a long way to go here. But thanks for the comments.

Thanks Roland and Randy..... much appreciated

I don't see anything wrong with the positions. That's just what they do. That's like not taking a shot of figure skating when the guy has the girl in the air just because of how he holds her. It's just how they do things...

As far as the "arty PP" I can't really tell on this laptop...but I'd stick with the "normal PP" - sharpness, saturation, contrast - ie the basics - for sports. Just my opinion though.

nice work, Mark. Nice to have more light on the faces, but I guess it's part of the sport for the face to be in the shade when the athlete is upside-down. and for what it's worth, agree with your discretion. nice cropping job in the 5th.

Nice job, good to see integrity! My daughter is 11, I agree, although I don't know that I would have thought of it while composing, surely would have when it came to posting! I'm learning, through my own difficulties, just how hard it is to get the lighting right in settings such as these, with action sometimes quite fast. Very good job, keep up the good work and thanks for pointing out the details for us beginners!

Thanks all for your comments. Gymnastics presents some great photographic opportunities, I am just scrtching the surface on how to take advantage of them.

CDI.... while in principle I agree with ya, it is still a very fine line and I am just choosing to stay well away from it right now.

Jeff.... yes.... two camera bodies and two lenses. Most shots taken from the public areas, though a couple were taken from the floor. My old 1D really struggles with the noise and the 20d really really struggles with focusing. I too am waiting for the what ever is next from Canon.... hoping we have some word next month at PPA.

Mark - These are good -- really, really good! I especially like the mood you've captured in #1 -- it's as if we can see their thoughts as they review their upcoming routines mentally. Perfect timing on #'s 2 through 7 too. #8 doesn't rock my boat but I bet she and her folks love it. Good stuff!

Jerry - Yeah... agreed on the last one. I had in my mind what I wanted to do with that one but my skills to get there are lacking. I just have so many shots that are so much the same, I was trying to do something different. Gymnastics is like shooting pitchers, after a while you get your timing going and it becomes rather predictable. Next time I will be trying more with the floor excersizes. The nice thing about gymnastics is you know where the actions going to happen, so you just need to be ready.

Thanks jseens, appreciate the comment. The old crotch shot just doesn't feel right.... and I get more of them then I would like. It's one thing to do the move... it's another to have it frozen in time... if you know what I mean.

You said it! I have a lot of the same shots, but I learned some new angles going out this time so I plan to use them at the next one to improve those types of shots. I have yet to get a vault shot I like. That's probably the fastest movement of all the events - tough shooting. There are a couple of new angles I still want to try too.

Great shot! Interesting angle!

I'll share mine when I get a chance, but they are only good to show as a sequence of shots with somewhat blurred subjects. I tried taking them on the approach this time as they started their leap, but I didn't like any of those either.

That and landing on the floor make for some heavy cheeks....Unflaterring yes, but fun to torment them with!

My vault shots rarely work with 1/500 for me and I am chasing 14 year olds. I imagine the speed of the girls at the college level is faster so you will need some faster lenses. Your vault shot is a good example. The vault is pretty well focused and sharp. However, the gymnast is not and I suspect the cause is motion blur.

This shot was done at f1.8 & 1/640....and I still have blur....

I went back over my vault shots. Nothing worth sharing. Great work guys.

I have one shot that I wish was flattering because the move stilled the whole stadium. She went from the high to the low bar on the uneven bars and stuck a landing with her hands on the bar. She had to bend her legs way over to stop the momentum, but it was breathtaking.

Jeff... post away man. We're all here trying to figure out what works and what doesn't. Sometimes you can learn more from a shot that didn't work and explaining why or what you would do different.

My dream for the vault would be to get a remote camera with a fish eye below, but how to nest it in there without creating risk for the girls would be an issue. Here is a side shot from last year that seemed to work except the background ended up pretty busy.

http://www.buzzershot.com/images/_MG_8240_edited-2_sm.jpg

GBRANDY... your shot my have just had the girl out of focus, plain and simple. If you were that close, and shooting at 1.8... you were on the edge of having enough DOF to make it work. It's a neat angle though as you get her face coming right at ya.

GBRandy

Jeff, post them anyway Jeff. This is not a photo contest here, but a forum to learn...any examples of angle, exposure and other details should help all of us...even if they aren't front page SI material.

Croasdail, My DOF was pretty small, but I can usually hit pretty close. The OOF maybe just a focal plane issue, but this was one of the older girls and she just plain moves faster.

Your vault shot is sweet....wish our girls got that kind of blocking and height...but they're just in middle school :)

Mark, these are very nice although I agree with Super that your "unflattering" aversion shows through ... and I have a young daughter, too. I sometimes wonder about shooting with studio flash where the duration is 1/5000th or faster for this type of image ... couldn't be done during competition but would be interesting to try 'offline'.

Nice ones. But as usually in this sport, crappy light conditions and crappy background. I wish this would change once in future, since this sport looks beautiful on photos. But just because of bad light and all that mess in background, I really hate to shoot it. It's pretty much impossible to get really cool photo.
Just one suggestion... #5 is a bit too tight crop, while most of others have a bit too lose crop for my taste.

Croasdail
14th of February 2007 (Wed), 08:10
Primoz, good points. I would love to be able to shoot a practice and be able to bring my own lights. The backgrounds in this location are particularly bad, particularly for the beam the way they set it up. I usually crop safe. Is this better feeling?

TooManyHobbies
14th of February 2007 (Wed), 08:53
At NCSU the only way I could get a good background is to shoot from up high down onto the floor, but at UNC I picked a spot specifically to get simple backgrounds. The uneven bars background had plain block and the ballance beam had these bleachers. 2 out of 4 backgrounds is a lot better than none.

I have earlier shots that I could use to switch out the bottom part to get rid of the camera guy and some other distractions. The spaces between the bleachers makes this easy - nice black line to select at.

14th of February 2007 (Wed), 09:56
Yes for me it's definitely better this way. But I'm used to cropping really tight... that's what is left from my first boss, who was always complaining that I don't crop tight enough :)

Mark? John?, where were you seated. I might have you in one of my shots.

From your vault shot.... about 20 seats to the left about 5 rows from the floor. I have already been exposed once by DavidEB. I think the world is a better off place with me behind the camera instead of in front of it.

On your last shot, I just really have a problem getting good focus with all those lines behind. But you seemed to have pulled it off. If not on the floor, I always shoot from the ends....we'll, almost always.

I put it on center point AF and focused on the beam in the middle. Then I turned AF off and went manual. The whole competition I was switching between manual and auto focus. I only left auto on for the floor work, but I don't always.

PS with a constant focus lens you can zoom in focus and then zoom where you want after you've locked it, but you probably know all this already.

People always find something wrong and if it happens to be the person involved there can be many implications. I think these are awesome. I remember the first time I went to shoot gymnstics thinking the landings would be great shots! Foolish me, I quickly let that idea go. Uncool shots and not flattering at all. I now start shooting so that I run out of burst before the landing. Of course the camera usually recovers in time to take the after landing pose shot.

Did you go to UNC tonight for the last meet? I was there, but a bad back kept me from enjoying it. I only got a few great shots, no good ones, and a lot of ok ones.

I got invited to shoot in Maryland where 8 teams will be competing at once and some gymnasts want me to post my shots on my website so they can look at them.

Awesome shot. I'll need to try that one sometime. I think it would be easier at NCSU, but their team is not as good. Where you on the floor and were you the one using the grey zoom without the hood walking around?

I was trying for some unique shots myself so my sucess rate was lower than it could be; now that I got a lot of the common ones. There was one shot at the vault that would have been awesome if it was in focus. I let the camera do the AF work this time instead of me now that I'm using the 1d instead of the 20d, but they dipped out of sight before going over from my position. I like it when they come forward over the vault instead of backwards and I get them head on. Almost all were doing the latter so I didn't get many chances at the shot I wanted. I wasn't in a good position for floor, but I think I got some great shots that can later be turned into a composite on the beam. I think the unique shots I was trying to get on the bars may have been easier with MF, but again I was putting the 1d through its AF paces.

FL was awesome and brought up UNC's game. There were a lot of moves that weren't common place Friday that you usually only see one or two gymnasts do.

Keep in touch next time you go. Maybe we can meet up.

I would like to come to state sime time. Last year the coach invited me over, but I never made it. He probably wouldn't even know who I am now. But I like the lighting over at State... it gives ya some neat black backgrounds ... rather then the blue mess sometimes at Carolina.

The lack of crowds in the background was disappointing in the UNC shots. There is a lot of pressure on these gymnastics programs and if they don't get fan support, we're all going to see this sport die at NCAA Div 1 schools.

So sad.

The UNC shots are missleading as the fans pretty much all sit on the one side of the floor. The only real way to shoot them would be opposite them and that is unpracticle because of the way the floor is setup with the beam along the back wall. So I understand the reasoning behind the locations... though not optimal, it just is what it is I would actually say that attendance is up this year... guessing around 20%.

On the question... my main focus was the eyes. I have another shot where I came back out some and got the leg as well, but it just isn't as impactful to me. Just personal preference I guess...

I guess I implied something was missing without the leg. I agree the face/eyes carry the image even if the other leg was there...

Curious, how many attend a meet? I imagine that's the basketball arena and holds 10-15K. Don't know much about UNC. :) Lived in Raleigh for 3-4 years, was never a basketball fan so I don't know much about the team or venue. I did see a Wolfpack game during the Valvano era and their miracle year... :)

You know this really says something! I think it is a little dark. But that pose and face/eyes tell such a story. Had you captured her right foot, too, it would have prize winning! Makes me realize how much I still have to learn

Been to a couple... here is a shot from Friday Night

Brice, Your right that this was a basketball venue - it used to be the mens location while Jordan played there, but they have since moved up to the much much larger Dean Smith building. It's where the ladies team plays, plus stuff like volleyball and wrestling. If you were here with Valvano... that was some time ago.

Big oversized guy not using a lens hood... that would be me. I have had the dang things fall off at the most unopportune times, so unless I need it... I don't use it.

I would like to come to state sime time. Last year the coach invited me over, but I never made it. He probably wouldn't even know who I am now. But I like the lighting over at State... it gives ya some neat black backgrounds ... rather then the blue mess sometimes at Carolina.

I am not sure about Saturdays meet.... I think I am shooting a baseball game... not sure. Ping me if you head over. Cheers.

I'm on for 7pm Friday Mar 14th at NCSU. UNC will be there too.

I won't reiterate every comment made so far but great work, photographically and ethically. Man are those some strong athletes! I think you did quite well with the exposures and post work. Not a sport I've shot so I can't say much other than I think any coach, parent, or athlete would be thrilled to have these. Nice work man!

Great pics!!

oh and...........

Got to Hell Carolina!!
Go State!!

No worries... my wife is a State Alum... so we are a split household. We have connections to all three schools, so out house becomes a mess over the next few weeks.

FYI: Interesting fact I found out from the university media departments. Per NCAA rules you are not allowed to sell to students or relatives, but you are allowed to sell back to the schools or coaches.

Thats an intersting take on it.... there was a whole thread on this topic over on Sportsshooter.com... and actually it came out that you could sell to the athletes and parents, but it had to be done in a way that did not look like the student and/or their family was given any preferential treatment over what any other student might have been given. When your a part timer and don't do active other stuff alot, that becomes a high bar to clear proving you were selling at market rate. Therefor, for the schools it becomes an issue of compliance and just a lot easier for them to say no to everything. Each school monitors this differently. State is one of the most strict there is on this issue - they must have been burned in the past or have a very active legal department.

NCSU was one of the 2 schools that returned my inquiry. They said it wasn't a school rule but an NCAA rule. I've been looking on the NCAA site, but haven't found anything yet. I'll check the link you gave. Thanks.

Did you go?

GW asked me to take pictures for them which limits my number of great shots since they aren't a UNC. I still got a couple.

I tried some new spots and some different camera modes and learned a few more things. The saved WB's from UNC and NCSU are great. You can even name them that in the cameras. The pics are up on my website, but I haven't done any editing yet (right out of the camera), expect my web action which signs, burns the edge, and resizes.

Nope... ended up in Charlotte. Didn't think I was going to get the invite to go but at the last minute a slot opened up. So I missed out.

Great color.... so sick of that drab blue. I would like to come over and shoot sometime though. Looks good. Wish I had been able to make it. Any more home meets this year?

Nice shots. Good to see some locals on POTN too. I have considered shooting gymnastics, as well as volleyball, baseball, and a few other of the collegiate local sports. This gives me some motivation to get out there.......looks like the public view is pretty good. :)

No more home meets. We'll have to pick another sport to finish out the year. What should we go for next?

Welcome local POTN'er nice to meet you. Try going to my NC forum site in my sig. It's been lacking traffic lately, but its a good way to keep track of the locals. There also is a NC Where Are You? thread on POTN.

Track...... head over to duke the first weekend of April. Great event in great sight lines. Unfortunately I will not be there this year and I have commitments in Florida that weekend. I love shooting this event and am bummed I will be missing it this year. I will be looking for other events to catch if I can.
