I see references to print sizes that I don't understand.

4x6, 8x12 I understand.

Can someone list or link me to a list of sizes?

Thanks in advance.

So people in countries using the metric system don't get 4"x6" or 8"x12" prints, but get slightly different sizes, 4 1/8" x 5 7/8" , 8 1/4" x 11 3/4" respectivly?

Isn't that different than the ratio of 35mm film negitives? 24mm x 36mm or 1 to 1.5

Does that mean prints must be cropped slightly when printed?

Yes, there will be cropping, but keep in mind that we do the same here Stateside of the big pond. We have the common print sizes of 5X7, 8X10, the odd 8.5X11, 11X14 - none of these match the exact 2:3 ratio of the 35 mm format (nor do they match the 4:3 ratio that Olympus is pushing).

Since the subject was brought up, I have to go off-topic a bit...

Where can I find A3 paper? I've checked high and low around here - all the Staples and OfficeMax and such. Any A3 would help, but I also wouldn't mind some photo-quality stuff. I'm printing to an Epson 1280 inkjet.

Since Canada is a metric country, I shall launch a search in our shops and see if A3 is available. In fact I beleive there is a shop just down the road that carries it.
Only A3 or ya wanna try some A4 as well?

If your printer can handle A3, it should also handle A4, at least in landscape format, as the length of A4 is the width of A3. Ok you probably won't need it, or if you'd need it, you can always cut A3 in half...

Now that I check the link above and find that A4 is smaller than A3... I'm looking for the biggest the printer can handle, which is A3.

That is rubbish!
my lab in the UK does 6x4 7x5 8x6 9x6 10x8 12x8 15x10 prints online and also different (and bigger) sizes if you use mail order.

The 'A' system is quite simple.
e.g A4 is 297x210mm
A3 is the equivilent of putting 2 A4 sheets end-to-end at its shortest dimension - A3= 297x420mm, this works for all A sizes.
The higher the number the smaller the sheet - A0 is the biggest, not sure but i think A6 is the smallest.
Then there are B and C sizes, these are usually for envelopes etc.

Question : Who uses metric system, who the other (dunno how to call it... the inches...)

Metric : Continental Europe for sure, Canada as posted before
The other : USA

What do you use in UK? The distances on the street are in miles, so i guess the other. What paper size do you use? A4 or letter?

And in Asia? Australia? Africa? South-America? In any of the 200+- countries in the world?

I can't answer Ikinaa's probing question, but here's a link on paper sizes that is very concise compared to the comprehensive info in Mikesht's link.

In the Uk we use the metric system, we converted years ago but some people still use the 'other' system, which is called imperial.
Yes we still use miles, unlike the Swedish (who are also metric) but use "swedish miles" - these are not the same as standard miles :?

Most photo delevoping labs refer to print sizes in imperial measurments

The standard format for small prints is 10 x 15 cm here, which is almost the same as 4 x 6 inches (1 inch = 2.54 cm). We also have 13 x 18 cm (about 5 x 7 inches), 20 x 30 cm (about 8 x 12 inches), etc....

We use the metric system for length, weight. However there are certain things that have not been converted from Imperial eg: Saying to someone "I'm going to pound you into the dirt" looses something if you say" I'm going to Kilo (or 2.2 pound) you into the dirt".
The Camel guy would look rather foolish saying "I'd walk a klick for one".
Some things ya just can't change.
BTW our photo paper and prints are still Imperial.
