Not sure if this is the right forum to ask but what the heck, you folks seem to know your Canon stuff pretty darn well ...
I'm making my list of toys for the future and MIGHT get a film camera to compliment my 10D. Which Canon EOS film camera would be a good choice in similarity to the 10D? ... same lenses a big must.
I thought I'd start the process of looking now so I can get a little knowledge before I get it sometime in the not to distant future.
Why film? I want a quality camera for backup without a huge learning curve, but can't justify spending for another 10D or even a 300D when I still need all those "L" lenses. :?
Thanks! :D

Elan II, Elan 7, or 7n, depending on your budget. Very similar operation.

I'm kind of partial to the Elan IIe, and I understand the Elan 7 is even better. A2/A2e bodies are excellent also(I have one of each), but they have issues with a weak command dial which can break very easy if you dont use it carefully. Having said this, I've never had a problem with mine.
I would use any of the above as a backup in a heartbeat. The older 630 is a sleeper also. The 630 has a full compliment of features, including 5 fps(Frames per second) if you need it.

EOS 3, You can actually find them for about as much as an Elan 7 now and days.

Agreed, The EOS 3 is an excellent camera. I just thought it might still be a bit pricey. A friend recently bought one, and I think he paid $900 used. If you can buy one at a reasonable price, it would definately do the job. My friend is real happy with his.

Had the same debate for a while.
 I just ordered an Elan 7 (it's on the way). It's the right compromise between price and features (for my needs).

You'll find the Elan 7 will have the most in common with the 10D.. the 10D was based on the Elan 7 design.
The EOS 3 is a Pro body.. in a better class all together.

I have an EOS 3 to supplement my digital. It is a great camera.

I can say that I like the Elan 7E over the Elan II's or A2"s. I have had them all and the elan 7 is great. The A2's have a history of comand dial problems, I had 2 and they both went out.
Now I can not say anything about the EOS 3, I have never used one or even held one. I am sure they are a great camera also.

I have both an EOS3 and and Elan IIe. Both are great cameras, either would work fine as a film compliment to your 10D. I prefer the EOS3, but it is a little more expensive. The Elan IIe was my backup to the EOS3 before I went digital.

I'd recommend going with the EOS-300 / Rebel-Ti or Elan-7 type body. If you start shooting with an EOS-3 you will *hate* your 10D. The 3 is so much more responsive and fast.

I agree with dds. Just ordered an Elan 7 from Canoga Camera out of California for $259. This is the best price I found from a dealer I know to be reputable. Will use this as a film supplement to my D60. Sure would like to upgrade to a 10D, but all cash seem to be disappearing into lenses and other stuff.
Maybe I will be able to put away my AE-1 and FD lenses.

Buy a Drebel to back up your 10D.
Why spend the bucks on film and developing?

Film as a backup good choice it's inexpensive & still get good quality. I currently use the Elan II as backup and its great. I believe there is a new version of the Elan 7 but try camera stores to see about getting a good used film based camera.

Thanks for all the advise!
The EOS 3 looks great but it is more than I want to spend on a backup camera.
Seems the Elan 7, Elan 7E, Elan 7E Date seem to be in the price range I'm thinking. Now I can go check them out and at least have an idea of what I'm looking for.
The purcahse of this camera is still a little ways off as I'm only a few weeks from ordering my 100-400 L IS.
Appreciate the advise ... again, Thanks! :D

   Your post will make me think long and hard on spending the money on a 'film' camera but not because of a 'film habit' but because 'will I really use it?'
I took a photo class last autumn. One of the projects was to shoot 3 rolls of film. One B&W and two color but different types and speeds of film. The B&W is still in my old Minolta X-700 with maybe half the roll to go. The other two rolls are still sitting here waiting for me to use them ... I just can't seem to do it.
So why am I looking for a EOS film camera? About a year ago I decided to get my Minolta out of the closet and use it with my Sony. My telephoto lens had mold on an inside element which explained the softness of EVERY photo on the 1st roll I took. I decided to fix it myself and busted the thing so it's almost useless. I ended up buying a cheap replacement and I got what I paid for ... crap! The Minolta does take good photos with the 50mm ans WA lenses I have but I don't want to buy anymore lenses when I'm trying to add to my Canon 10D & 'L' lens addiction.
Having played around again with my X-700 and changing lenses and all a 35mm has to offer I decided to go for the 10D and I'm not going back to P&S.
What I find funny is when I bought my Sony Mavica FD-97, I found it was Soooooo easy just taking a small camera bag every where I went and leaving the heavy 35mm bag in the closet. Now I lug this huge bag (usually 2 plus the Mavica) which is even heavier than my 35mm bag was and enjoy it even more!
Anyway ... I'm not addicted to film but if I don't hit the lottery before I decide to get another Canon EOS, it will most likely be a 35mm film version.

I'll recommend the 7E or 7NE (current model). The eye control is a VERY cool feature. It is what I miss the most on my 300D.
