Yes, much of it is out of focus. Even at an aperture of f/40 the DoF is just under 12mm if my calculations are anywhere near correct. If my calculations are off then the DoF could be as high as 14mm. :)

And just think... I forgot to put on the 1.4 TC... This is about 1.7:1. With the 1.4 TC I should get almost 2.4:1.

Don't worry about the SMB. It's a given. We'll each have a Mk II and a 600mm f/4 pretty soon. :)

The front of the lens was 7.5" from the mum. Most of that is hood, so I had about 2-2.5" from the hood to the mum. I had the lights (3 x 150-watt Halogens) ranging from 6" to 18" away. It's a major pain to get the lights so that they're not pointed toward the lens when they're that close.

I really need to make some type of "barn doors" along with diffusers. This won't be easy since they're Halogen and get too hot. I may have to move to 150-watt flourescents, but they're so big...


In the past I used a setup like this:

That's a 2' x 4' ceiling light panel, with halogens pointing at it to diffuse.

But that doesn't work for extreme closeup like the mum - the object has to be back inside the dome to get light to the front of it. But now it's too far away from the lens... :)
