I looked all over and couldn't find a definite answer, but I'm guessing it's no. But I saw that you can adjust flash power and was maybe hoping this was some kind of manual flash mode that might eliminate preflash? Am I incorrect in hoping so? I have one on the way (deal I couldn't pass up) and can't wait.
thanks

Set it to M mode (pp. 65 and 66 of the Advanced user Guide). Of course you need to figure the flash level your self then; the pre-flash is how the camera calculates the necessary exposure.

Cool!! Is this advanced user guide online somewhere? I don't have the camera yet so I can't open up a hardcopy! :(
I'm an off camera slave junkie naturally I'd want to continue doing that, even if I move to a point and shoot camera at times.

Yep. I d/led it from the Canon USA site. Go to the A540, then choose the Support and Download submenus.
