I am looking at getting myself my next expensive piece of glass. I have seen that there is a 28-300 L glass lens coming out. I have also looked at the 100-400 with IS. When looking at B&H, they have a 35-350mm L glass lens which doesn't have IS. This isn't on Canon's site any more. Is it a discontinued lens? I assume it's not a pup!
What experience have people got of these various lenses (not much for the new one I guess) and do you have any recommendations?
Thanks
Rob

A ton of us have the 100-400 here and love it. It's a great performer and a great price. The 28-300 isn't available yet so we don't have any real-world stats on that yet. The 35-350 is supposed to be pretty soft, but there's also some people flitting around saying the 100-400 is soft and sucks dust into your camera, which is just ludicrous.
I have a friend who has the 35-350 that I'll be able to putz with soon when they come down to visit (I think) in two-three weeks. I don't know if anyone here has one.
Key question: What do you shoot? Or, what are you wanting to shoot?

Thanks for the prompt feedback. The longer lens stuff is often aircraft (although it tends to come in handy for a variety of other things at times like landscape long shots and even occasional wedding photos). I use a 100-300 at the moment which has been fine to date. Having just got my 10D, a won't have any problems with getting the aircarft to fit the frame given the increased effective length.
I have seen a lot of people talking about the 100-400 here. Hadn't seen much mention of the 35-350 at all which is why I posted.
Cheers

Another thought might be the 70-200 f2.8 (IS or non IS) and the 1.4 extender.

FYI, Canon has discontinued the 35-350mm which is replaced by the 28-300mm...
No comment on the 28-300mm as it doens't appear to exist just yet,.. a few months I think.. but I would definately take the 100-400mm over the 35-350mm IMHO

I agree. I tried the 35-350. It was decent in the middle of its range but very soft at full reach and exhibited CA at the short end.
The list price of the 28-300 in the UK is £2,050 according to EOS magazine, which makes it 30% more expensive than the model it replaced. I would think the US price will be in the $3,000 region.
